C-Notes 2045.11 - Reini is the Man!

Post by GoldenOne » Wed Jan 27, 2021 2:38 pm

Post-season accolades are usually a crap-shoot in the BBA. There are voters who give their favorites first-place votes. There are those that pick one category of stats, let's just WAR as an example in this case, and select the top or top 5 highest. There are those that try and sway other voters away from their players in the hopes that they wont have to pay out certain large bonuses. There are even those that will not vote for certain players in the belief that their value would increase of they wont an award.

With just under a third of the votes being submitted, there is a growing chance that Keijo 'Coach' Reini will not win Reliever of the Year. That would be a travesty!

Let's take a look at a few categories, shall we? And, for the sake of argument, let's just say Reini got 9.0 more innings pitched this season, and his rates stayed the same, so he would qualify for inclusion in these awards. (No time was missed due to injury this season, Charlotte wasnt as good the last couple of months and Reini just didnt pitch as often.) The below represents where the players placed on the all-time leaderboards for the BBA (not just the JL.)

Win Probability Added (WPA):
-- Reini: #4 (6.12)
-- Leach: Not in top 20
(Cornelio Lozano, who is running away with the award in the FL, is 7th all-time with a 5.9 WPA.)

Strikeouts:
-- Reini: #20, with 341 Ks (Reini is #3 all-time in the JL)
-- Leach: Not in top 20
(Lozano is at #14 with 344 Ks.)
This list is littered with Nebraska and Hobbs entries. In fact, other than Nebraska, Hobbs, Lozano, and Reini, the only other name that shows up in the top 20 is Voo Fowler from the late 1970s.)

Strikeout %:
-- Reini: #2 (Assuming those extra 9 innings) at 58.3% (#1 is Mark Bobovnik back in 1991 at an amazing 96.97%!!)
-- Leach: #11 at 34.59%
(Lozano, with another 12.2 innings, would move Reini down a peg with his 63.1%.)

K% - BB%:
-- Reini: #1 at 46.16%
-- Leach: Outside the top 20
(Again, Lozano would knock Reini down a peg with his 51.91%.)

Let's compare them straight-up for a few categories as well and see how big of a difference those numbers make:
-- Leach has 21.2 more innings pitched this season.
-- In 83 games, Leach was 10-8 with 14 saves. In 73 games, Reini was 8-4 with 13 saves.
-- Leach: 10 blown saves. Reini: 1 blown save.
-- Reini had a 2.41 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. Leach had a 2.58 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.
-- K/9: Reini- 20.06; Leach- 12.73
-- Hits/9: Reini- 3.53; Leach- 7.32
-- HRs: Reini- 23; Leach- 11

I cold go on, but I think you guys get the picture. Dont penalize Reini because Charlotte stunk. Do the right thing!

There is still time - Vote Reini for RP of the Year!!

EDM was 3 for 30 against Reini. A single, double and HR. 18Ks with 10 walks. A .100/.357/.233 slash line. I have no doubt its a name you would prefer to forget. :)
