In what can only be described as the greediest, pettiest, and Go-F&ck-Yourself move of all time, 3B Luis 'Pendragon' González, decided to retire on September 4th.
Why are we calling Pendragon greedy and petty for retiring? After all, the Guatemalan had a solid 16 years of service time after signing a contract with the Halifax Hawks/Nashville Bluebirds organization when they discovered him in 2028. He played in over 2,100 games, the majority of which were at SS. He spent most of his major league time in Montreal and Huntsville/Chicago, retiring with a career slash line of .300/.346/.411 and a total of 338 SBs. How could we honestly call someone like that, a guy just doing his job and doing it well, petty and greedy?
Well, let's take a step back. Actually, let's step back just one day.
On September 3rd, Pendragon accepted and offer of a minor league contract. So, he had a change of heart, you may be thinking. Well, the signing bonus he accepted to sign that contract was a whopping $5.00. That's right, no extra zeros in this offer - five dollars. Yes, the Cougars were being a little petty and vindictive towards Pendragon with their offer after all, assumingly as a way to get back at Pendragon after he rebuffed them in FA this past winter.
But, it was Luis 'Pendragon' González who had the last laugh with the Cougars. He took their $5 back to Solola, Guatemala with him, got drunk, and phoned in his retirement the next day. GFY Cougars!
