Guillermo Sánchez. Sanchez came to the Charlotte organization in June 2040, Charlotte's first season, in the trade that sent Pepe Jaramillo to the Rockville Pikemen. For Rockville, Sanchez was still in A ball. When he came to the Charlotte organization, the Cougar Front Office decided to send him down to Rookie ball to begin with, for 4 games before they moved him up to Short A ball, for 8 more games to finish out the season. Sanchez's Florida Prospect League showing (3-0, 2.50 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) made the decision to push Sanchez into AAA for the 2041 season rather easy. Sanchez didnt disappoint, going 18-4 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, good enough to earn him a September call-up to end the season. He also managed to bring home a Pitcher of the Month Award and won the 2041 RHML (AAA) GL Mitch Cain Hurler Award.
While Sanchez didnt dazzle anyone in those 6 starts that September but he impressed the Cougar brass enough to keep him on the big-league club in 2042 (that, and there really was no other choices.) While 2042 wasnt a big year (8-16, 5.31 ERA, 1.46 WHIP in 183 innings, 2.5 WAR), Sanchez did manage to be Charlotte's selection to the All Star game that year. He also managed a complete game shut out (4 Ks and 1 BB) against the Crawdads.
In 2043, the 22yo Sanchez got better. He managed to go 7-13 (remember, the Cougars stink) with a 4.71 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 194 innings and a 3.4 WAR, not missing a start. He was also good enough to earn the 2043 JL Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award at P.
In 2044, Sanchez decided to start the season with a bang - surprise, he also comes up on his first Arbitration year after this season - by pitching a 2-hit shutout against the Brooklyn Robins, with 6 Ks and zero walks! Sanchez doesnt seem like the sexiest pitcher on the team but his durability, consistency, and ever-increasing abilities helps to make him a cornerstone of this year's Cougars team, and hopefully for several more years to come.
