C-Notes 2044.02 - The Stoner Returns

Post by GoldenOne » Mon Sep 07, 2020 8:02 pm

He's back!

Aaron Stone. He turns 34 in May. At the end of last season, he exercised his player option (which only 24% of respondents predicted he would do), foregoing $15M for the 2044 season and a potential $15M in the 2045 season. (The 2045 season was a Team Option year though that was probably going to be bought out for $4M.)

Stone's gamble didnt pay off. The market for catchers just didnt seem to be there this Free Agency season. Hsin 'Hollywood' Mei didnt even get signed until the final days of Spring Training and even that was for only 1-year at $24M. Stone's ability at the catching position has dwindled with his advancing age, to the point where he should really be on a team as a DH and back-up catcher. That certainly hurt his case as well.

Ultimately, GM Brett Golden decided to offer Stone a 1-year, $3.5M contract to bring the extremely popular player back to Charlotte. When asked about the signing, GM Golden had this to say - "Why the hell not? the Stoner can still hit decently and knows how to get on base really well. Yes, he had more Passed Balls per inning than at pretty much any other time in his career. But, he's good for our young pitching core. And, he threw out a career high 42.9% of would-be base stealers last year. That's 10% higher than both his first and last year with Yellow Springs. Look, if he can put up another 2.0+ WAR again this season, what's not to like about this signing. Stoner works hard and the fans love him, and he still gets on base and creates runs. Happy to have him back in Charlotte!"

Obviously, Stone should not have opted out.

Sheesh, I've made some poor financial decisions in real life and OOTP, but nothing like that.
 They say it don't be like it is, but it do!
