Ah, September 1st. The day contenders look to bring up that young stud that doesnt realize he should be fearful of facing that future hall of famer. The day that the, let's just call them non-contenders, look to bring up those young studs as they look forward to next season. For the Charlotte Cougars, royalty in the non-contender category, GM Brett Golden decided to bring up seven, yes, seven, players from AAA Richmond. We asked Golden about each player and here is what he had to say:

-- SP Ashton Brooks. When we drafted Ashton in the 3rd round this year, we had him rated as a 6/6/4, with some pretty elite pitches. In just a few short months, we are now rating him as a 9/7/4, with those same three elite pitches. Unless he gets his fingers stuck in a bowling ball and sprains and ankle, he'll be here permanently.

-- P Jeff Russell. Jeff came up and helped us out when we had some injuries and ineffectiveness earlier this summer. We'll give him another shot to see where he really wants to be playing next season.

-- RP Lou Adams. Lou is another one that saw some time earlier this summer. He didnt see much action but we'll see what we can do about that this month.

-- C Alfonso Jareño. Fonzie Jalapeño is another guy that saw a couple of weeks up here this summer. He's a defense-first catcher but he can handle a bat.

-- 1B César Torres. Really looking forward to seeing this guy play. Not the greatest defensively at 1B but his bat should make up for that. Moved up quick from AA to AAA this season and was killing it in Richmond where it was a struggle to keep him down until September.

-- 2B John Weber. Look, I'm not stupid, he's the owner's grandson. It helps that he's pretty good and I would call him up anyway.

-- RF Sixto Mejía. Sixto, another guy that had a cup of coffee this summer. It was 3 games, but he's had a couple of seasons under his belt already. I brought him over to Nashville when I was there. I'd like to see what he's got with my own eyes.

When asked to give an overall comment about the 7 call-ups, Golden was heard to say, "I should have brought up more. Some of these veterans on this team.....well, let's just say they havent quite earned their paychecks this season. We'll see how it goes this September and then we'll see what next season's roster looks like."

Two years ago Mejia drove in 100 runs. Now he can barely sniff the majors. Ratings changes? No, none at all.

Might as well get a look at some kids. Brooks looks like a nice little bumper, hope he doesn't end up in the gutter.

Yeah, Meija is odd. Maybe a "change of scenery" candidate?

Thought about bringing Moore (#1 overall pick) up as well but decided against it. We'll give him a shot in spring training.
