On August 6th, In a surprising move, the Charlotte Cougars organization signed Bill Inkster to the second highest contract in the Warren Cox League (Montreal's Juan Freitas owns the number one slot) to Manage their AA New Bern Bears team.

Inkster formally Managed the Yellow Springs Nine for four and a half years, four straight Division Championships, and a record of 461-276 record he was let go. With the Nine 8 games back of the Louisville Sluggers (on pace to win 112 games) in the Heartland, GM Ron Collins had had enough following a 3-2 loss to the San Fernando Bears and decided to let Inkster go before finishing the final season of his contract.

The Nine's loss was Charlotte's gain however. When asked about the hiring, GM Golden was quoted as saying, "Are you kidding me? Why wouldn't we bring in Bill? With the record he has. No offense to the guy he replaced - I can't even remember his name, that's how much he impressed me - but this is Bill Inkster. Collins usually knows what he's doing but maybe one of those "funky" cigarettes you can find in San Fernando messed with his head a little too much."

When asked why New Bern then and not Charlotte, Golden responded with, "Well, we just signed Fernando (Aguilar) this past off season and he's on contract until 2046. Down in AAA Richmond, we really like Manol Didier and he'll be with us through next season. Bill looked at our situation, and of course, the money, and decided to give New Bern a shot. Of course, we'll have him in camp with us and anything can happen. This is the BBA, afterall."
