C-Notes 2042.2 - Where'd Who Go?

Post by GoldenOne » Fri Mar 20, 2020 4:44 pm

As the 2041 season came to a close, the Charlotte Cougars didnt have too many decisions they had to make, but it didnt make those decisions any easier. Here is a quick review of the guys that wont be wearing the black and white pinstripes in 2042:

- Manager Daniel Berrocales, After serving as the Bench Coach for GM Golden for 5 years in Nashville, Golden gave Berrocales a chance to lead the ship for two seasons in Charlotte. While not a bad Manager, Berrocales was not an especially great one either. There were more than a couple of Free Agents during the 2040 off season that were not interested in playing for Berrocales and several current players that were just not happy playing for him either. All-in-all, it was an easy decision not to renew Berrocales' contract when it expired this off season. Berrocales has yet to find employment.

- Catcher António Tobías. While Antonio did what was asked of him in the batter's box, going .227/.335/.433 with 21 home runs and a WAR of 1.5 (in 124 games), Although Tobias had an above average year throwing runners out he also had a Catcher's ERA that was his highest since 2034, when he only caught 34 games. Tobias was not offered a new contract and remains a Free Agent.

- 1B Albert Gaona. Gaona decided to exercise an Opt Out in his contract this off season, passing up on $9 million. The way this league pays for offense, it is understandable that Gaona decided to gamble on himself. He launched his 300th home run in 2041 on his way to becoming an All Star. He had near identical outputs in his two season in Charlotte - .242/.329/.498 with 38 HRs and a 2.6 WAR in 2040 and a .255/.329/.506 with 34 HRs and a 1.5 WAR in 2041. Gaona currently remains a Free Agent.

- CL Luis 'Skipper' Ortega. Ortega was brought over from Portland in mid-August of 2040 for $1 in an obvious cost-cutting move for Portland. Adding a high-priced Closer was definitely not something the Cougars needed. It was no surprise that Ortega did not Opt Out of the the remaining $14 million that he would have gotten paid for 2042 but it was also no surprise that Charlotte paid the $3 million to void the last year of his contract. Ortega has a great year in Charlotte, going 1-6 with 34 saves, an ERA of 3.09 and 85 Ks to 23 BBs in 75.2 innings for a WAR of 2.0. Ortega has since signed a 4-year, @29.5 million contract with the reigning Landis Champions, the Edmonton Jackrabbits.

While there were also a couple of other moves made - Arbitration not offered, impending Free Agents not offered a contract, players not wanting to re-sign - none of them really amounted to anything significant and all still remain Free Agents or have signed a minor league contract elsewhere.
