2062.1 Sometimes change is good.

Charlotte Flyers pitching coach Allen Mendoza sat down with 27 year old lefty pitcher Tsuyoshi Mori on the final day of the regular season.

Mendoza: Hey kid. Congrats on getting the chance to play up here for a few days. I know you've been waiting a long time for that opportunity.

Mori: Yeah. It didn't go quite like I hoped, especially those first couple games in Montreal. But, I felt a lot better against the Jimmies.

Mendoza: Good...good. Glad to hear that. Look. I'm just gonna get down to it. I know you probably feel like you should've been up here sooner, what with you being a 2nd round pick and all. But, to be honest, that wasn't really a very deep draft. You wouldn't have been anywhere near the 2nd round the next year. That's not to say you didn't deserve to get picked there, but I gotta tell you the truth. Ok, so we brought you up here in late September to let you do one of two things. One, you prove you're more than what the scouts say you are, or two, you get knocked around and we have a tough conversation.

Mori: So, does that mean this is going to be a tough conversation?

Mendoza: Maybe a little bit, kid. It's kind of a good news, bad news type of thing. So, the bad news is that we don't really think you're going to be able to get guys out at this level if you keep doing what you've always done.

Mori: Yeah. That doesn't sound good...so, are you like, releasing me?

Mendoza: I guess that depends.

Mori: Depends? Depends on what?

Mendoza: Depends on whether or not you're willing to make the changes I'm about to suggest.

Mori: I want to pitch in the BBA. I'll definitely hear you out.

Mendoza: Good. That's what I want to hear. So, you throw like 6 pitches, and a couple of them are even pretty decent. But on the whole, they're...not really working for you. What I would like to suggest...is that you give up your dream of being a starting pitcher at this level.

Mori: What do you mean? This still sounds like bad news.

Mendoza: Hear me out. I think you could be a lot better if you stopped trying to throw so many damn pitches and just focused on two of 'em. We'll keep your fastball. You're comfortable with it and I think it will be more effective when you stop throwin' all that other stuff. And then, I'll let you pick the other one...either your curve or your changeup.

Mori: So, just throw two pitches? Like, forever?

Mendoza: Yep. From now on. So, which of those two pitches do you want to keep? Curve or change?

Mori: I guess...the change? I've always liked the change.

Mendoza: Alright. Change it is. So, we're going to take it down to just the 4-seamer and the change, and you're gonna always be comin' out of the pen...so that means you can really let it fly on that fastball. You can go max effort every pitch. That should get you like a few more miles per hour on the fastball, making it a better pitch.

Mori: And if I do this...does that mean I get to be in Charlotte next year?

Mendoza: Well, kid, if you don't do this, you definitely won't be pitchin' for the Flyers. If you do...then you at least have a chance. I can guarantee you a spot in Spring Training where you can show off the work we'll do this offseason and you'll be given every opportunity to make the club from there. But...it's gonna come down to how you use the two pitches you're keepin'. We're not just gonna carry you on the roster because you made this change. You've still gotta be able to get guys out.

Mori: Understood. I do this and I have a chance. I don't do this...and you guys throw me to the curb.

Mendoza: That's maybe not how I would've said it...but yeah. That sums it up.

Mori: Alright. I'm willing to give it a shot.
