C-Notes 2042.3 - The Trade

Post by GoldenOne » Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:07 pm

June 16th, 2041 will be a day to remember in Cougar history. It will either be known as the day the team obtained some corner stones to the lineup for years to come or it will be known as the day they traded away a #1 overall draft pick that ended up in the Hall of Fame.

On June 1st, 2041, 18 year old Amos Swallows was drafted with the overall #1 pick of the 2041 draft. Swallows signed with the Cougars, for $6.5M, on June 10th. On June 16th, Swallows found himself packing his yet-to-be-unpacked bags and heading north-west for a press conference in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The #1 rated prospect (70 POT) of the 2041 draft had a 10/6/6 Potential with a 13 Potential Knucleball to go along with a few other potentially average pitches. With that type of potential, a shot at the Hall of Fame is not easily dissuaded.

And what was it that the Cougars, coming off a 48-win inaugural season, decided that they valued more than the potential that Swallows brought to their system? Well, baseball lore says that you need to be strong up the middle. Nobody really disputes this. So, that is what the Cougars did. Let's take a look at who they brought in:

- 2B Jharod Thealer. Thealer is a 55 POT player who is owed $29.5M for five more seasons. Thealer is not a stud on offense, holding career averages of .268/.394/.370 but he gets on base a lot and plays some above average defense. He struggled a lot in the batter's box in his 87 games in Charlotte, going .200/.336/.283, but played his average (for him) defense in the field.

- SS Joey 'Buttons' O'Brien. O'Brien is a another 55 POT player that is in his final year of arbitration, making $3.3M for the 2042 season. O'Brien is another solid player, with career averages of .282/.337/.360 and above average defense over his six seasons in the BBA. He seemed to enjoy his transition to Charlotte, going .351/.428/.421 during his 49 games since moving southeast from Edmonton. (O'Brien went down for 6 weeks with a pulled hamstring just a few short weeks after the trade.) He split his time almost evenly between SS and 3B in Charlotte, producing zero errors and close-to-career metrics in most other categories as well.

- CF Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli is a 50 POT player that is under contract for 5 years at $31.5M with the last year being a Player Option. Machiavelli is another average offensive player (career .267/.336/.362) that plays stellar defense (he has already won 3 Zimmer Diamond Glove awards), can run, and has excellent Leadership abilities. He is another one that seemed to enjoy the transition to Charlotte, finishing his 87 games with a slash line of .284/.364/.441. Those numbers include 23 doubles, 11 triples, and 27 SBs. Its not inconceivable that Machiavelli could threaten Milt Linares, Jr.'s record of 32 triples in a season in 2010, playing a full season in the large outfield in Dollar Field.

- RF Sebastian 'Nino' Fradesso. The 20 year old Fradesso is a 60 POT player that was a September call-up that ended up playing 26 games for the Cougars, going .242/.308/.385. Fradesso is expected to provide more offense once he gets his feet under him in Charlotte. His .301/.359/.454 in two seasons of AAA ball were his worst numbers since his Rookie League season. The corner outfielder doesnt have much range, which might be a drawback in the expanse of the Charlotte outfield, but his cannon of an arm should keep runners at bay with the balls he can get to.

- SP Emilio Brazini. Brazini is a 20 year old, 65 POT starting pitcher that made the move to AAA late in the season following the Cougars's September call-ups. While the 9/6/4 POT of this left-hander might not get anyone too excited, his 3 elite pitches (yes, the change-up is stuck) will make people take notice. Brazini will start the season in AAA Richmond, and may even need a little more time in AA New Bern, but he surely see his way onto the big league club while at least 3 of the other four players on this list are still there.

At first I wasn't a big fan of the move, but looking at it now I think it was a good one for you to make. I wasn't big on Swallows on draft day but getting more pieces that you can use over one "up in the air" prospect is probably a good move to make for Charlotte.

Honestly, I'd do that trade every time, especially when it would be such a long time for our teams to build through the draft.
