Fun With UMEBA Baserunning - The Tag-up

Post by RonCo » Tue Feb 04, 2020 5:36 pm

A few days back I posted a zip file with lots of arcane csv files that included information on every plate appearance in the league through the first week in June. Admittedly, they are a bit dense, and not for everyone's cuppa. But I can lose hours and hours in them. For example, I asked myself, who, in the UMEBA had the best baserunners--not noted by stolen bases, but measured instead by how many runners successfully tag up.

Here is the answer

UMEBA TAG OPPORTUNITIES

TeamOutSafe%Success
Beirut Cedars310097.1%
Bucharest Impalers814494.7%
Cairo Chariot Archers BC812093.8%
Istanbul Bosphorus1211190.2%
Grand Total12189888.1%
Baghdad Kings2014888.1%
Jerusalem Hebrew Hammers158284.5%
Manama Pearls2710279.1%
Mumbai Metro Stars289176.5%

Baserunners around the league are successful at about an 88% rate. Beruit, however, has been successful at 97%. Mumbai is at 76%.

Perhaps its worthwhile to note that Beiruit does not attempt tag ups as often as many others. I have no idea why that is. Could be fewer fly ball hitters, fewer guys on base, or less aggressive settings. Could be smarter/better baserunning scores.

You call it.

I wonder how outfielders arms effect how often those runners tag up.

UMEBA Team Leaders in OF Assists but these can also be stretching a single to a double or double to a triple.

Yep. That's another factor that probably plays in it. One could also use this to do some guessing at the run-added values of these things.

Well, Cairo batters are performing the way I wanted them to, defence and speed. I keep on trying to get them to steal more and my owner is pissed that they don’t but I don’t want to move all the sliders full on. The SS is letting the IF defence down though so maybe Stevenson ought to get a September call up to see if that will help?

Hey, RonCo, I agree with you that looking at it from a runs added perspective is nice, because both the success rate AND the number of attempts play into that. However, there is one missing piece to that... knowing the number of outs in the inning. For example, tagging up at third and scoring on the first out of the inning is less beneficial than doing it on the second out of the inning.

Interesting thoughts. I can get inning with my script, but not yet outs. I'll have to think about that a bit.
