2051: 13 Sao Paolo's Letter to the Brewsterians - LEGENDARY

Sao Paulo’s Letter to the Brewsterians

There are very few things that OOTP puts in all-caps, excepting of course, OOTP. LEGENDARY is one of those things.

Sean Cole, manager of the Sao Paulo Pilots currently on a 9-2 tear and back into 3rd place, is LEGENDARY.

From Fort Worth, Texas, Sean Cole was drafted in the 10th round by Marquette, and hung around in the minors until he was 24, before retiring in 2011. As a really old guy in A-ball, Sean crushed the ball like he had in his limited Abs at that level every year he’d spent there, but even a backup catcher with a .453 OBP knows that he’s a a backup catcher. That last year in Tombstone the Geckos went 97-28. Cole wouldn’t appear in organised ball again for another 30 years, but he had learned how to win.

When Cole returned to the game, the circumstances were inauspicious. Found at the back of a run down dive bar in Jakarta, Cole had spent many of the intervening three decades lost in the jungles of Indonesia, but even at 54, had quite a stylish little goatee. Tattooed on each fore-arm were the words WIN LIKE A GECKO, in all-capitals, eerily prefiguring his reaching LEGENDARY status as a manager a few years later.

Sean was appointed Wet Sox manager seemingly be default, and what occurred might then be the most amazing series of results in managerial history, first in Jakarta, then in Ascunscion, then in Budapest, now in Sao Paolo.

In the 9 seasons since becoming a manager, Sean Cole won manager of the year award in 2042, 2043, 2044, 2046, 2047, 2048 and 2049.
Sean Cole won championships in 2041, 2042, 2043, 2044, 2046, 2047, 2048 and 2049.

What happened in 2045? A combination of hitters hitting 40 points less, pitchers giving up a run a game more and a whole pile of amphetamines lead Cole’s team to a 4th place finish and only finishing 4 games over .500.

What happened in 2051? He came second.

What happens in 2052? We shall see.

What happens in 2053? His salary rises to $2.5 million. A truly LEGENDARY reward for an A-ball catcher who was out of the game for 30 years.*
