2045:07 Bucharest Times: Secret to Bucharest winning season

Post by allenciox » Mon Dec 21, 2020 11:12 am

So what is responsible for the Bucharest winning ways this season?

Well, some might say it is batting. After all, the team leads BANC in wOBA (.361), BA (.282), OBP (.365), home runs, runs scored, and walks.

Others might argue it is defense with a +15.7 ZR and .706 Defensive Efficiency.

But I would argue that the answer lies in their extraordinary starting pitching. Bucharest's team ERA (3.32) leads all teams in UMEBA, but that is actually hurt somewhat by their 4.18 ERA for bullpen pitchers. Their starters have accrued an outstanding 2.98 ERA. So let's take a look at those starters and why they are shutting down all opposition.

The onslaught is led by the ace, 18-yo Neill Fenomore , last year's 2nd round draft pick, with a 2.49 ERA, which is the best in all of UMEBA. Although his K/9 is down slightly from the league leading 7.7 he posted in his rookie year last year to 7.3 and his BB/9 is up from 1.8 to 2.4, he has instilled added movement on his pitches, dropping from 1.4 HR/9 last season to an astonishing 0.9/9 this year. The tradeoff is worth it, as he has already accumulated 2.7 WAR in less than half a season. If he continues to do as well in the rest of the season, he will end up with 6.9 WAR. And last week was his best week of the season --- he pitched two complete game wins, giving up a total of one run combined between the two games.

Next up is Ragnar Lothbrok , who was picked up as a free agent at the end of last season. His ERA is "only" 2.68, slightly worse than Neill, and second best in all of UMEBA, but his FIP leads all pitchers at 2.98. He is showing domination in every category, with a WAR of 3.0 (7.9 pace for the year), 0.6 HR/9, 1.9 BB/9, and 7.7 K/9.

There isn't much of a fall-off in the Impaler's first round draft pick last year, 19-yo Owen Geddes , with a 3.13 ERA, 3.22 FIP, 2.5 WAR (pace of 6.5), 1.0 HR/9, 1.7 BB/9, and 8.3 K/9. These three pitchers are 1-2-3 in BANC in strikeouts.

So what about the fourth starter, last year's third round pick Ajanidha Praveen? Well he leads all of BANC in wins with 9 (to go with only 3 losses), with a 3.15 ERA (worst in entire Bucharest rotation, but almost the same as the league leader in BURT!), 2.2 WAR (5.8 pace), 0.7 HR/9, 2.0 BB/9, but only 5.5 K/9.

So one might think that we take it down a notch for starter #5. Now, we started the season with Leonardo Gómez at that spot, and he did a fine but not outstanding job there. But that was because Dermott Halford , acquired in the offseason for $1.1 million per year for three years, was hurt in spring training and missed the first six weeks of the season. Since his return, however, Dermott has been nothing short of fantastic in that fifth starter role, with a 2.87 ERA in 31 1/3 IP in five games started, going 3-1 in those games.

So, yeah, this reporter thinks there are a number of reasons why the Impalers have kicked it up a notch this season. But, I don't think that anybody can really question that starting pitching is reason #1.

I am sure that many of these ERAs will climb some over the rest of the season.

I am not so sure. They look solid.

Just as your squad's success is pinned on pitching, so is Tripoli's demise. :(

Pretty clear distinction so far between the have and the have nots over in the UMEBA. Definitely considering some changes as I am clearly in the have not equation of things at the moment :(
