'A Season Recap' 2054.02 - Excerpt from the Sao Paulo Press on September 27th, 2054

The following is an excerpt from the Sao Paulo Press, a news organization established in 1922. This article by Matthew Tress, (Series 66, Issue 204), is listed under the Sports Section published on September 27th, 2054:

{Excerpt Begins}

'"Another Season has come and gone. Sao Paulo has failed to make the playoffs once more. Something, I'm sure a lot of Pilots fans are used to in the last couple of seasons. Although it can be sad at first, a lot of progress has been made behind the scenes. The new GM of the team, Aiden Sones, claims he is finally adapting to the GM lifestyle. "I noticed a lot of financial issues to start the season, and over the course of a few months, the organization has been figuring out ways to maximize profit, while keeping most of our players". One player the organization had to cut ties with was Alfonso Castillo who, according to inside sources of the organization, felt unhappy with the instability of front office management, and demanded an unnecessary amount of money, that the Pilots could not give away. With that being said, it still was a disappointing season. The GBC looks to be more stable, so the Free-Agent focused plan Sones and the rest of the front office wanted to use, looked to be like a useless plan. Sones also believed the team was very unlucky for most of the season. "If you look at most of our batters, their BABIP is significantly lower than it should be. Injuries were also a big concern making a lot of our hitters fail to get enough PA for the stats to even out. On the pitchers side, FIP and BABIP were mainly looked at to see luck, and neither of those stats were showing luck for the organization either. I wouldn't gamble a single penny with the amount of the luck the team has been having. That, and I'm also too young to gamble... "

For what needs to be improved, Sones mentioned contact as the main concern. "When you are the worst team at getting hits, it can be really frustrating." Not only were the Pilots last in hits, but they were last at doubles, and batting average. The combination of both the lack of contact and doubles plagued the Pilots to have the worst slugging percentage, and factored greatly into having the worst collective OPS in the league. On a positive note, Sones mentioned, the amount of stolen bases his team produced in 162 games was fascinating. "One accomplishment the entire team should be proud of is our speed. We are the only team to amass over 100 stolen bases, and have an average of .72 SB/game."

On the pitching side, Sones was ecstatic on how well the pitchers have developed. Being the second best team in Hits Allowed, the only kryptonite for the entire pitching staff was the long-ball, giving up 205 HR during the season. "A lot of people think we have a bad pitching staff, but that's not the case. We have a lot of groundball pitchers, so the strikeout numbers won't be a lot. We are also located in a hitter-friendly ballpark, that can explain the high HR's against total. What fans should be looking for is consistency, and 5 CG is no laughing matter."

When asked what the team will improve on next year, Sones was quick to respond. "Hitting, just any hitting. The pitching staff we have is capable to limit the amount of runs a playoff team like Tokyo can sustain. A common theme many might notice these next couple of months is the amount of hitters we will sign, as well as re-signing good veterans of course."

So was this season a failure in Sao Paulo? Maybe. We simply do not know. But whatever happens in the next few months will determine how serious the Pilots are about winning, or if they just have an incompetent General Manager. Only time will tell, and I'll be there for the ride.
