Hammer Time - Heading Into the September Call-Up

Post by Jess64 » Sun Apr 16, 2023 10:38 am

Jerusalem has struggled to get out of the bottom of the GBC and the addition of new General Manager, Jesse Stollings, has not seen the immediate impact that he had hoped. Even though the team has seen the front office and management roles filled, the staff has struggled with cohesion and it cannot help to have an impact on the team's on-the-field play. Since his hiring, the team has a 5-7 record and has dropped from 13 1/2 games back to 15. Their current record of 60-70 finds them in 5th place and with no real shot at the playoffs. So the organization has to start looking to the future.

Who will probably not be coming back to continue the fight next season? There are a host of players who are not happy right now, rightly so because of the poor play of the team, that have indicated they are not willing to discuss extensions.

The Hammers have been able to sign some of the players to extensions.

Starting pitcher Adel bin Husam al Din signed a 2 year extension. This 26 year old has had a down season so far, but the hope is he will return to his 2053 form where he had a 15-2 record.

Pitcher Mitch Freeman agreed to a 2 year extension to retain his veteran presence in the bullpen. This 34 year-old has been a steady arm coming in for relief and the hope is he will continue to do so.

29 year old reliever Francisco Molina also inked a 2 year extension. Molina has not had a great career so far with the Hammers, but the hope is that will change with the new management and direction the team wants to go in.

Stan Smit, the 30 year old bullpen arm, has agreed to stay 2 more seasons as well. Smit has had solid, if not spectacular, numbers and his veteran presence should aid the youngsters that will more than likely be joining the team next season.

The biggest catch of the re-signings so far has to be the extension of Closer Francisco Hernandez. The 29 year old has been a solid arm to bring games to a close. He is a hard-working player who strives to improve every day.

With the upcoming September Call-Up, who are the players that could have the biggest impact on the Hebrew Hammers moving forward?

1st Base Shihei Endo is a Rule V pick from 2052 that is languishing in AA. He has been stuck here because of a wealth of older 1st Basemen. He has consistently been batting over .290 with his adequate play on the field means that he can hold his own with Jerusalem.

Utility Infielder Aidan Reijnen was a 2044 Round 12 draft selection. Even though he is on the 40-man roster, he seems to be stuck in the minors. We are not sure he can break into the GBC squad, but he deserves a shot to see what he can do.

Left Fielder Rajko Lovre is an exciting youngster who has shown he has a strong bat, a great eye at the plate , can hold his own in left field and a strong work ethic to get better. He was the 8th pick in the 2051 draft and deserves to be challenged more than he has been in A ball. This 20 year old has been progressing well so dont be shocked to see him make a quick move into AAA play next season.

Pitcher Paris Zervakos is a 22 year old that was a steal in the 12th round of the 2049 draft. He has a big arm, a strong repertoire of pitches and the drive to be playing with Jerusalem. He will be moving from the AAA squad and be holding down a bullpen spot next season.

Zervako leads a strong set of young pitchers that, if they continue to develop will help stabilize the future of Jerusalem.

The season has not lived up to expectations, but a strong finish could set the team up for a better experience next season, and that is all that can happen, get better every time we take the field.
