Where Are They Now - Youp Lenoir

Post by WestCoastStros » Sat Jun 04, 2022 12:02 am

Fans will be dismayed to learn Youp Lenoir will not be among the first class of inductees, but that would also suggest the class will be small as he certainly is a Top-10 eligible player after amassing 13.7 WAR over the equivalent of six full seasons with Jerusalem.

Signed as an international amateur out of Belgium, Lenoir pocketed a reported $1.85M from the Rockville Pikemen but was released just three years later when he aged out of their complex. The Hebrew Hammers must have seen something they could quickly adjust as they swopped in to bring him aboard and he almost immediately shot up the prospect rankings, climbing to #32 in the UMEBA prior to the 2039 season. He picked up ABA NL Player of the Week honors that June and July before his season ended prematurely with a fractured wrist, though still ranked third in Unsung Hero voting.

He returned with a vengeance, making the first of four consecutive All-Star Games while playing all 162 for Jerusalem in the title-winning 2040 campaign, earning Platinum Stick recognition at 3B. He followed that with a career year in 2041, slashing .329/.407/.545 and embracing his reputation as a guy who did no one thing superbly, but played “just damn good baseball.” He was most renowned over his knack for earning hit-by-pitches, as he led the league twice and ranked top-6 three other times in his prime.

Sadly, his career trickled out sooner than most at age 26 as he was let go following a disappointing 2045 season where he recorded the only sub-.300 OBP mark of his career and a -0.7 WAR. He has been passed between eight clubs in the six years since, most recently re-signing as minor league depth and probably more importantly veteran leadership for the AA affiliate of Charlotte despite being just 32yo.
