THE Hammer 2049.8: Spring Training Cuts

THE Hammer
25 Feb 2049
Jerusalem, Israel
**********************************

The players dread it. The managers dread it. Executives likely think it stings even a little. It's the pink tag in the players' lockers. The definitive sign that the player's contribution for the upcoming season is at least going to start somewhere other than MLB.

The Hammers announced some moves after the first half of Spring Training:

Pitchers

P Anatolii Efron

The two pitchers who came into Spring Training with the most to prove were 30yo Jorge Olvera and 24yo Anatolii Efron had to know they were on slippery rocks from the start. Well Olvera knows now as he was waived and DFA. We'll see if Efron gets the message as his ST numbers are not encouraging: 3 IP, 9.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP. Sure, it's only 3 IP but there's only so much PT to go around for players to prove themselves or get stretched out for the beginning of the regular season.

RHP Brett Vandervenshould know he's in a RHP duel with RHP Ragnvard Lamm since there are not many LHP in ST. He should know now after seeing Lamm optioned to AAA.

RHP Darren Asseldonk was optioned to AAA because you can only take so much Asseldonk.

Players should be on their toes as the team will cut loose another 2 or 3 arms before April. Curiously, the team did issue a late spot to P Theron Muscouri, but it's reported to be a pure talent audition as there will most likely come the opportunity for him to take a temporary place in the pen in 2049.

Position Players

OF Garry Mihalsky (2048: 66 G, 5 HR, 22 RBI, .214/.297/.364, -0.4 WAR) will put it together at some point, but the numbers so far scream for a player to be getting daily ABs. That's not going to happen for Mihalsky in Jerusalem so he'll begin 2049 in Johannesburg.

2B Joe Race and 2B Atissi Mbama are essentially the same player. Unfortunately, the Joe Race version of Joe Race didn't win the...okay, I can't go that far... Race was placed on waivers and DFA'd this week. The Hammers were also hosting 3 catchers in ST so one was getting cut the closer opening day and it came, as expected, at the expense of Jorge Martínez who was optioned to AAA.

Another rumble from which only one man was going to prevail was a platoon partner for CF Tyler Pavey. We'll likely see plenty of CF Domingo Torres as an emergency backup in case of an injury, but as of now he goes to the kid's table.

I make it even worse for them by hiring a crappy old bus and driving them across the many lands to their new homes
