Looking at pitchers in Spring Training is kind of like doing a Jenga puzzle in a mirror...one piece could collapse the entire puzzle, but finding it and especially in a mirror is some mental gymnastics. It will be interesting, too, how the pitchers fair with the new fences.
Starting Rotation
There are 3 pitchers that absolutely will be in the opening day rotation:
SP Edwin Harney (2048: 32 G, 31 GS, 11-13, 4.44 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, +4.1 WAR)
SP Hsuang-tsung Xú (2048: 32 G, 31 GS, 10-8, 4.35 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, +2.8 WAR)
Harney and Xú are basically 1a and 1b in that both are critical to the team's success but there's really not much difference between the two. With a gun to my head, probably Harney. But both had some worrisome stretches last season. Not AAA stretches but still not what the team could weather.
SP Leon Ludeman (2048: 34 G, 30 GS, 13-10, 4.83, 1.47, +2.9 WAR)
A +2.9 WAR will do the job any time of the year so Ludeman has a solid #3 look to him. If he removes the little question marks around him then the Hammers will have a nice #1-#3 in the rotation.
SP Mokichi Yamamoto (2048 AAA: 14 GS, 7-1, 2.23 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, +2.3 WAR)
Yamamoto is going to have a relatively long leash based on his work in AAA last year, so we think we can pencil him in as the #4.
The following players did bullpen work or did their best work in AAA. They have a chance to have a good season but they need to beat a quick trigger:
SP Jaypee Estancia (2048: 37 G, 4 GS, 4-4, 5.66 WAR, 1.44 WHIP, +0.3)
Estancia needs to pick a lane. That said, I'm being extra hard on him having expected more improvement from a solid 2047. Hopefully he can pick back up from there this year.
P Manuel Andrés (2048: 39 G, 16 GS, 6-3, 3.66 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, +1.7 WAR)
P Ángel Vélez (2048: 20 G, 11 GS, 3-3, 5.16 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, +0.4 WAR)
These two are virtually identical profile-wise. Now if one of them will please seize the #4 or #5 spot this year...
P Wally Bowden (2048 AAA: 25 G, 25 GS, 8-12, 3.94 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, +2.4 WAR)
Please bring some of that AAA to MLB, Wally.
P Ragnvard Lamm (2048: 34 G, 3 GS, 3-3, 5.87 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, -0.1 WAR)
P Guillermo Sánchez (2048: 31 G, 5 GS, 3-3, 6.91 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, +0.3 WAR)
These guys are more bullpen contenders. And I wish Sánchez would bring some of his Mumbai magic to Jerusalem.
