Some New Makeup Powder

Hammers fans attending games this season will notice that the fences at Holy Land Ballpark have been adjusted. We are used to high-scoring affairs that could go either way at home, but it may be helping opponents rather than the Hammers. The lines and the gaps have been adjusted closer to the average park factor and raised to tamp down the long balls that, in management's opinion, should cut down on how quickly games can turn in any team's favor when deep flies turn into deep home runs. The OF has also been configured to allow just under average for allowing doubles and triples. All told it should make for lower scoring games and increasing pitchers' approaches. How it will effect power hitters should be clear after a month into the season.

Logjams (plural)

Headed into Spring Training, GM Ben Teague has many decisions to make in both the outfield and infield (catcher and the pitching staff & pen are likely 80% certain at this point). In the offense, it's a question of too many objects being forced into different sized holes. The Hammers have pure sluggers. They also have OBP guys, speedy guys, and players all over the scale defensively. Let's start with the outfield and note that some of the talent not listed here has already been trimmed to AAA:

Image
Dane Licht (2048: 603 AB, 31 HR, 122 RBI, .350/.428/.590, +6.7 WAR) - (Ratings: LF 7, CF 0, RF 7)
Licht will play and that is certain as stone. But where? He's a natural fit for the DH role if he's outclassed defensively - and he is. But there are more issues at that particular spot.

LF José Figueroa (2048: 555 AB, 18 HR, 73 RBI, .326/.368/.495, WAR +3.5) - (Ratings: LF 8, CF 3, RF 8)
Another guy who absolutely will be in the lineup but, obviously, not at CF.

RF António Cordero (2048: 392 AB, 8 HR, 48 RBI, .288/.370/.441, WAR +2.7) - (Ratings: LF 0, CF 7, RF 11)
Cordero spent enough time in AAA last year to prove he's past that level and, I mean, RF maybe?

CF Tyler Pavey (2048: 371 AB, 12 HR, 42 RBI, 13 SB .259/.299.380, +1.5 WAR) - (Ratings: LF 0, CF 9, RF 0)
Pavey also missed stretches of time, the IL in his case, but can you cast away his CF defense? It's a position you expect too much production from but he has shown to be excellent using his speed in tight spots.

CF Domingo Torres (2048 AA: 239, 0 HR, 16 RBI, 20 SB, .226/.262/.226) - (Ratings: LF 11, 9 CF, RF 0)
Spent most of last season in AA. Definitely a backup and that's fine but where?

RF Pedro Esquivel (2048 AAA: 121 AB, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 10 SB, .264/.305./.339, +0.7 WAR) - (Ratings: LF 10, CF 7, RF 10)
Another players who spent much of last season in the minors and another clear defensive backup. LF behind Figueroa? He may bump Cordero's 11 at RF.

CF Juan López (2048: 240 AB, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 4 SB, .258/.317/.304, 0 WAR) (Ratings: LF 11, 9 CF, 8 RF)
Another defense stalwart at LF. Or CF. No, definitely RF.

And there is the player who was the franchise's 2nd-rated prospect in 2048 behind Dane Licht. Looking at LF Garry Mihalsky's batting ratings just make you drool, but is he forced, by default to showoff at AAA this year? Sure, there's the DH...only where does Licht go?

Our guess is that you might see some sort of platoon at LF with Esquivel & López. Their platoon makes Torres one-dimensional...except his one dimension happens to be CF. That's stepping on Tyler Pavey as it should, but is it certain that Torres is a MiL player and not a CF tool I need handy? Cordero has to be the man at RF. Now we've got Esquivel busy at LF but with a 10 RF rating and López with at an 8. This is why we all love Spring Training!
