The Jerusalem Hebrew Hammers have faced many obstacles this season but there is no bigger obstacle than losing arguably the best player in UMEBA for the season due to injury. But that's where the Hammers are after 1B Adam Backhouse suffered a high ankle sprain during last night's game against the Baghdad Kings. GM Ben Teague said, "It was bad. I grabbed my binoculars and even before they got the leg stabilized his ankle was the size of a volleyball at least."

The worst of the news came later when it was determined that Backhouse had a high ankle sprain. "With an ankle sprain a guy can be out for 3-4 weeks. A high-ankle sprain is 2 months at best." Backhouse said from the hospital, "There's nothing you can do, you know? It happens. You just put your head down and focus on getting better, taking a new role on the team...kind of a cheerleader."

But the news is more complicated by the team's and Backhouse's contract situation. Adam has a salary this year of $10.8 million. That's a fair price for the defending Position Player of the Year award, but it gets complicated after that. Backhouse can opt out of the rest of his contract at the end of the season. He would be forfeiting $11.4 million in 2049 and $12.5 million in 2050 but he also could draw a much larger deal in free agency. Now the team and Backhouse will be looking at a possible end to his time in Jerusalem without playing the second half of 2048.

"It's a log to digest that's for sure. But first we want to make sure Backhouse gets back to his reliable, dominating self," said Teague.

Backhouse has earned Player of the Week honors 29 times, of the Month 9 times, MVP once, and have been selected for the All-Star game 7 including this season.
