THE Hammer 2049.9: Opening Day Bullpen

Post by cheekimonk » Sat Dec 04, 2021 6:37 am

THE Hammer
31 March 2049
Jerusalem, Israel
**********************************

Here's the usual caveat for any bullpen: this will be a fluid thing with the exception of a few members.
The Hammers Opening Day bullpen was the result of management telling every member of the pitching pool they will have to earn their spot. This will be the weakest unit outside of the absolute shut down awaiting opposing lineups from the 7th to 9th innings. So here, tentatively, is the Hammers' bullpen to start the 2049 season:

Bullpen
(in no specific order)
CL LHP Jan Chmelyk

SU RHP Cyrille Santorio
SU RHP Adrian Kraft

MR LHP Manuel Andrés
MR LHP Theron Muscouri
MR RHP You-cheng Hang
MR RHP Darren Asseldonk

LR/Emergency Starter RHP Brett Vanderven

Image
23yo LHP Jan Chmelyk
2048: 64 G, 4-7, 32 SV, 2.59 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, +1.7 WAR
2045 draft 5th rnd, Pick 1, 89th overall - Jerusalem

Chmelyk is arguably the best closer in UMEBA. The fact that he is a LHP is a part of that, but here's a guy challenging hitters with a 101-mph fastball and a 10 curveball to set it up. And, yes, Chmelyk was an 89th overall pick and never rated a top prospect by OSA.

Image
23yo RHP Cyrille Santorio
2048: 59 G, 7-5, 3.97 ERA, 1.46 ERA, +0.7 WAR
2045 draft 15th rnd, 1st, 113th overall - Jerusalem

Santorio is almost a RH Chmelyk. He has shined in his chances at closing games so, you know, he's got that going for him if Chmelyk were to be injured or need a rest. 98mph heater with a 10 curveball.

Image
23yo RHP Adrian Kraft
2048: 61 G, 7-0, 3 SV, 2.24 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, +1.6 WAR
2045 draft 14th rnd, 1st, 105th overall - Jerusalem

Kraft is yet another fireballer with a 101mph fastball and an 8 slider to keep hitters off-balance. He has probably shined brighter than Santorio in his SVO, but regardless of that the Hammers have a formidable 3-headed dragon to nail down wins.

Image
34yo LHP Manuel Andrés
2048: 39 G, 16 GS, 6-3, 1 SV, 3.66 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, +1.7 WAR
Signed as FA 2047 by Jerusalem (prev. BBA: BRK, CAL, SAC)

Some would argue Andrés belongs in the rotation and they are partly right. Andrés has started at least 10 games in all of his major-league seasons. But he can shut down hitters in the middle innings, too, with a 101mph FB, 9 splitter, 9 circle change. As goes Kraft, so goes the success of the mid-innings getting games to the closeout crew.

Image
23yo LHP Theron Muscouri
2048 (AAA): 17 G, 2-2, 3 SV, 3.18 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, -0.2 WAR
2045 draft 20th rnd, 1st, 153rd overall - Jerusalem

When GM Ben Teague told pitchers they were going to have to grab bullpen spots in their teeth this year, he meant it. Muscouri finished ST with 12 IP, 2.25 ERA, 0.50 WHIP. But, to be honest, he got a final leg up by being a LHP. This is his rookie campaign so he'll likely see some AAA this season. He's a guy that relies on movement with a 10 slider and contrasts it with a 94mph fastball.

Image
24yo RHP You-cheng Hang
2048: 33 G, 0-1, 2 SV, 3.73 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, +0.8 WAR
2041 draft 3rd rnd, 8th, 26th overall

Hang is a pure Jerusalem product having seized his bullpen spot in 2047 and not coming close to letting it go. He just chills in the middle-innings with a 101mph fastball (seeing a trend here?), a 9 slider, and an 8 sinker. He's a crafty guy who thrives in situation where the other team has baserunners that need to be stranded.

Image
22yo RHP Darren Asseldonk
2048 (n/a - injured 7 mos)
2047 (AA): 27 G, 27 GS, 13-6, 3.83 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, +3.0 WAR
2044 draft 6th rnd, 1st, 42 overall

This will be the standard bullpen utility slot but, again, when GM Ben Teague challenged the pitchers he stuck to his word, and Asseldonk stepped up with a 3.68 ERA and 0.82 WHIP. He is the #43 top prospect in UMEBA. Honestly, management is surprised as anyone to see him in a Hammers uniform to start 2049 but he will get chances to prove himself.

Image
RHP Brett Vanderven
2048: 17 G, 1-0, 3.29 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, +0.0 WAR
2048 waiver claim from Beirut Cedars

Vanderven with actually sent to the Beirut Cedars in 2044 along with P Sherwood West, in exchange for P Jeffrey Smith, P Joe D'antonio, RF Domingo Corral and P Charlie Burns so he's kind of come back around where he started. Vanderven can start and he's experienced in this role as he's juggled it with P Ragnvard Lamm. It will be interesting to see if Vanderven has the commitment to hold on to his role.

Andres always frustrated me in the starters role. He looks to be good enough there, but he’s excelled out of the bullpen.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.

Man, you ain't joking. He should be a stud starter but it freaks him out somehow.
