Incredible. Just incredible. I am still in shock. I am writing this right after game 7 and the chawl I live in is in chaotic celebration. The streets are jammed with jubilant Stars fans amid a cacophony of honking horns. Nobody saw this coming and there wasn't much buzz about the team as the playoffs started. I tried to remain positive but glasses with lenses that rose tinted don't exist. This season was like if Lincoln was shot at but the bullet just went through his hat, Booth was apprehended and Ol' Abe, in obstinance, went on to enjoy the play.
Where to even begin? Carlos Reyes having an OPS of 1.150? Rookie Jesus Vazquez of all pitchers coming up huge in games 2 and 6? Another rookie in Ivan Lovett, he of the 55 total at bats in the regular season, hitting out of his mind during the playoffs after unseating vet Dan Jackson at second base. Mahaffey having a good series after being benched against Bucharest? Clapper! That massive series saving home run in the 7th inning of game 6 that will live on in Metro Stars lore forever. I'll admit I was down after they blew that early 5 run lead in game 3 and lost 9-8. Then after the Stars lost game 4 to go down 3-1 in the series I thought the wave had broken and I was ready to concede the near impossibility of beating two great teams in one post season only for them to win the next two games and I dared to hope again. Then they go and put up 5 in the first inning of game 7 against talented Johan Troika? None of it seems possible but it was.
There will be more time for reflection in the coming days but there are drinks to enjoy and hugs to give out so for now I am going to go out and celebrate this is a once in a life time thing. Well done Metro Stars, well done.
