2045 Issue 1 Mumbai Mirror
NEW STARS GM A BIT OF A MYSTERY
by Vihaan Dara
Metro Stars beat writer
As Rich Young settles into an office at the Ballpark of Mumbai as the new general manager of the Metro Stars, the stone faced carving of Shiva, the auspicious one, stands vigil across the deep waters of Mumbai harbor. But many Stars fans may feel this new start isn't an auspicious one.
The name Rich Young probably won't elicit excitement or even recognition from Stars fans and look at his checkered resume only adds to the mystery. Young got his start as the player/manager for the intramural baseball team at the Hudson Valley Institute of Technology. He's spent time as a ticket sales agent for the Auburn Doubledays, and the food and beverage manager for the Iowa Cubs, both MLB minor league affiliates. He's had a season as the pitching coach for Western Oregon University's baseball team, had a spell as the personal assistant to former NBA player Omer Asik before traveling to Europe to be the bench coach for the Hungarian national baseball team. From there he was hired as a scout for a Finnish “pesapallo” (a bat and ball game similar to baseball) team where he tried to recruit US baseball players to come to Finland to play. It didn't appear to be successful. He then attempted to become a sports agent in the US but lost focus and by the time he sold the business, it mostly represented reality tv performers.
So how did Young wind up in Mumbai? Well along with his vagabond baseball career he also seems to have a penchant for investing in a variety of business endeavors and that's where he came into contact with team owner Donald Little and the relationship seemed to grow from there. For his part Little says “Young is going to surprise a lot of people. He a solid baseball guy ready to take over a team.”. Whether auspicious or suspicious, time will tell.
In part two of this feature I will sit down with the Stars new general manager to talk over the team and a variety of topics.

Huh. Maybe try recruiting some Finnish pesapallo players for the Metro Stars - what could it hurt? At any rate, welcome to the crown jewel of the UMEBA. You appear to be well qualified to pick up the rich tradition of verbosity we Mumbai GMs and former GMs have established. I look forward to reading more. Much more!

What you lose in professionalism, intelligence, and tact when becoming part of the Metro Stars fraternity will be more than made up for by your increase in undeserved confidence and misguided wit.
It’s a devil’s bargain.
