As the sun sets on another UMEBA season, temperatures are finally getting bearable in the city of Mumbai. GM Webb was reported seen in his office mixing a stiff G&T with the requisite Bombay Sapphire gin while he stared at analytics tables wondering how a team that looked average to above-average on paper ended up being some kind of terrible.
To begin with, Webb is looking squarely at the defense. Team ZR at every position but 3B and SS was average to below average which means as long as you swung and made contact against the Metro Stars, you stood a great chance of reaching base. If the batter was especially studious, he would know to hit the ball to the right side either on the ground at 1B Kitakawa or even better, into RF at Robert Gowron. The below sums up the situation pretty well:
Pitching was also an issue with a Team ERA over 5 but when you factor in the terrible defense, it looks quite respectable at 4.74 FIP. Team OPS was middle of the pack at .755, which is definitely not good enough to win a pennant,
The challenge this off season for the Metro Stars will be to somehow get better fielders without sacrificing offense or better yet improving the offense. Gowron in particular looks like he's headed to the DH.
Coming up, the Mumbaikar is going to take a look at the farm system and present possible candidates to turn this baseball team from a clown car to something more respectable, like a Pinto.
