Metro Stars Take Down Cairo with Ease to Win United Cup (2039 - #20)

Post by ThePreyingManta » Fri Sep 06, 2019 11:15 pm

Fresh off of an epic series against Bucharest, the Metro Stars were right back at it again with the United Cup against Cairo starting only two days after Game 7 of the previous series. Leonardo Gomez was slated to start Game 1 against Chariot Archers’ SP Roberto Gomez. Leonardo pitched well, going 6 innings while allowing 2 runs. The Metro Stars scored 4 runs, all clustered in the middle innings, which was all they would need. The bullpen was once again excellent, as Aurelio Fernandez earned his third save of the postseason, and Mumbai won 4-2. Game 2 did not go as well for the Metro Stars, with the Chariot Archers striking early for 4 runs in the first 3 innings off of Kevin Hicken. The Metro Stars would fight back to pull within one in the bottom of the 5th. Cairo would score one more in the top of the 6th, and Mumbai would score in the bottom of the inning on a Juan Parra solo shot, but that would be all of the scoring. Cairo took Game 2 5-4.

Reese Rayner made his third start of the postseason in Game 3, looking for a sequel to his previous excellent outing. The Chariot Archers scored one in the bottom of the 1st, but Rayner pitched well overall, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings of work. The Metro Stars offense managed one run in 3rd before exploding in the 5th for 7 runs. The big inning was primarily fueled by singles, but Dave Molina added an exclamation point with a 2 run homer to put the Metro Stars up 8-1. Mumbai wouldn’t need any more runs but would score one more in the 7th and would eventually win 9-4. The Metro Stars sent Mike Manning to the mound in Game 4, where he hoped to last longer than the 3.1 innings he pitched in Game 7 against Bucharest. And that is exactly what he did, as Manning posted his longest outing of the year at 7.1 innings while allowing 3 runs. The potent Metro Stars offense once again wreaked havoc on the Cairo bullpen, scoring 3 runs in the 1st and 4 in the 5th. The Metro Stars won 7-3 to go ahead 3-1 in the series, needing only one more win to take home the United Cup. Leonardo Gomez got the start in Game 5 and pitched one of his patented no walks, low strikeouts outings. Gomez lasted 7.2 innings and allowed 3 runs while only striking out 3. The Metro Stars were held relatively quiet during the early innings by Abel Gibson and company. They trailed 3-2 heading into the 7th inning when they scored 5 runs thanks in part to a homer by (rightful MVP) Toshio Taguchi. Another two runs in the 8th and 9th innings sealed the win for Mumbai, 9-3. The Metro Stars won their first United Cup after taking down the Chariot Archers in 5 games in dominating fashion. RF Robert Gowron was named MVP of the series for his 3 homers, 6 runs, and 6 RBI.

Upon arrival back in Mumbai, the Metro Stars were greeted by a large contingent of fans at the airport. The fans surrounded the team plane and carried off the players and coaches to a wild party that some are saying still has not ended. Manager Mark Bruner has not been heard from since, which is a bit of a problem since his contract is up, and the Metro Stars would like to resign him. It will be a strange off-season for the Metro Stars, as almost the entire team is returning, but the entire coaching staff and front office is leaving. Whoever comes in next to take over the team will be well set up for the future but will undoubtedly be in another dogfight with Bucharest and Jerusalem in the Bancroft League.
