Metro Stars Choke Division Away, Still Make Playoffs (2039 - #18)

Post by ThePreyingManta » Fri Aug 30, 2019 11:36 am

After leading the division for almost the entire season and leading by three games on October 1, the Metro Stars lost four consecutive games to Bucharest and Beirut to fall behind the Impalers. A dominant showing against Beirut in game 162 forced a tiebreaker against Bucharest to decide the division champion. Unfortunately for the Metro Stars, this game was to be played in Bucharest, a seemingly immediate death sentence for Mumbai this season. The Metro Stars went ahead early in game 163, scoring 6 runs in the first 2 innings. The Impalers would slowly come back before scoring 3 runs against Motoichi Fujita in the 8th to go ahead 9-6. Mumbai scored 2 in the top of the 9th, but it was too little to make a difference. In a 9-8 win, Bucharest would take the division on the day after the last day of the season.

Despite playing the Impalers 7 times over the past 3 weeks, the Metro Stars must now play their most hated rival again in the opening round of the UMEBA playoffs. Mumbai has gone 13-18 versus Bucharest this season, including a 7-9 record on the road. Losing home field advantage appears to be a big issue for the Metro Stars, as they have gone 41-41 on the road compared to 55-26 at home. This is in large part due to Mumbai specifically building their lineup to fit the Ballpark of Mumbai, with its short wall in left field. At home this season, the Metro Stars have an OPS of .808, while their OPS on the road is a much lower .770. Interestingly enough, Bucharest also struggles on the road. The Impalers have an even larger home vs road OPS split, at .828 vs .750. It would not be surprising at all if the home team wins every game in this series. It will be imperative for the Metro Stars to dominate at home and steal at least one game on the road in Bucharest.

In the end, it didn’t matter. Mumbai rules!
