Blowouts All Around in 2-4 Week (9/15/39-9/21/39) 2039 - #17

Record: 2-4 (90-59) Run Differential: -2 (+144)

Looking for a big week to extend their lead atop the Bancroft League and hopefully eliminate Jerusalem from contention, the Metro Stars instead found themselves struggling in the finale of a series against Baghdad, a three-game set with Jerusalem, and the first two games of a series against Bucharest. Baghdad won the final game of the season series 4-2 before Jerusalem took 2 of 3 in a valiant final stand that will most likely end next week. To kick off a big series with huge implications for the playoffs, Mumbai blew out Bucharest 13-2 on the strength of 6 home runs from 6 different players and a nice outing from Reese Rayner. Bucharest struck back in game 2, winning 6-3.

What Went Right: Big Outings from Big Pitchers

Reese Rayner has been the Metro Stars’ most consistent pitcher this season, but he had been dealing with some struggles lately. Against Bucharest he put together his best outing in a month by striking out 9 Impalers over 6 innings while only allowing one run. Seeing a dominant outing by Rayner has to feel good for Metro Stars’ manager Mark Bruner as he starts to think about the possible playoff rotation. Earlier in the week, Mike Manning continued his string of successful starts. Manning is not a prototypical starter, looking more like an opener at times due to his lack of stamina. Nevertheless, he has given Mumbai quality innings at the beginning of ball games after being reinserted into the rotation on July 22. This week he pitched 5 scoreless innings against Jerusalem before Martin Bacardi took over in the 6th and earned a rare 4 inning save.

What Went Wrong: Offensive Inconsistencies Abound

In the two wins of the week, the Metro Stars scored 20 runs. In the four losses, they scored 8. While the offense has been mostly excellent this season, it has struggled with some inconsistency at times. Although the struggling players changed from game to game, Juan Parra can shoulder a hefty amount of the blame. In 16 at bats, the slugging first baseman only registered one hit, a single in the first game of the week against Baghdad. Parra has proven to be incredibly streaky in his short time with Mumbai, going from on fire in July to ice cold in August back to hot in the beginning of September until last week, when he found his way back to below freezing. CF Dave Molina and LF Daniel McDaniel have also struggled recently and will need to pick it up if the Metro Stars are to take back the division from Bucharest.

Up Next

Next week the Metro Stars will finish the series against Bucharest before welcoming Beirut to town. Then the team will travel to Jerusalem for the final time, hoping to eliminate the Hebrew Hammers in the process. After experimenting with a 6-man rotation, the team will go back to the normal 5-man pattern for the remainder of the regular season in hopes of securing home field advantage in the playoffs.

Hey, Rats (or Stars, whatever), take a look behind you... we hope to put stake in your heart just like you put stake in me heart all year. This is put-up or shut-up time. You know you no good compared to Impalers, but ***sigh*** you win anyway. Let's see if you be Rats or merely mice for rest of season.
