Record: 2-2 Run Differential: +2
Awaiting the Metro Stars after the All-Star Break were the Manama Pearls. Manama came into the series tied with Mumbai with a record of 47-31. The first game of the series got off to a good start for the Metro Stars, with C Jose Romero and 3B Toshio Taguchi hitting home runs before the 5th inning. Mumbai went into the 9th inning with a 5-3 lead over the Pearls before Aurelio Fernandez gave up three runs on four hits. Pearls’ closer Jose Rodriguez shut down the Metro Stars with a scoreless bottom of the 9th. Game two was scoreless for the first four innings until the Pearls scored a run in the 5th to go ahead. RF Rhys Nornabell delivered a big blow in the 8th with a three-run homer off of Mike Manning. Meanwhile, Manama starter Feheen Silvester shut down the Metro Stars, pitching a complete game while allowing only one run. Game three did not start off any better for the Metro Stars, as the Pearls scored four runs in the 4th inning. Mumbai closed the gap with two runs in the 5th before going ahead with five in the 7th. Antony Henderson hit a big three-run homer in the 7th on what was a big night for the second baseman. RP Leon Gonzalez got his fifth win of the year with three scoreless innings to end the night.
The next series against Istanbul started with an excellent start by Leonardo Gomez in what was hopefully a return to form. Toshio Taguchi went 2-4 with his 27th home run of the year to give the Metro Stars the win, 4-1.
Hitter of the Week: 3B Toshio Taguchi
.438/.470/1.188 5 R 6 RBI 4 HR
Taguchi has absolutely been on fire lately, with this being his fourth consecutive Hitter of the Week. In just four games last week, he homered four times with six RBI and five runs. I don’t think anyone saw this coming, but Taguchi has been the Metro Stars’ clear MVP this season, and he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
Pitcher of the Week: SP Leonardo Gomez
5.2 IP 1 ER 7 K 1.59 ERA 0.88 WHIP
Gomez started off the season on a tear before struggling in June. He appeared to get back on track in his most recent start. Although he only lasted 5.2 innings, Gomez allowed only five hits and one run to Istanbul. The Metro Stars have to hope that this is a sign of things to come for Gomez, as they could really use a consistent starter at the top of their rotation.
Other Notes
The Metro Stars added another big piece last week with the free agent signing of RF Robert Gowron. Gowron has never played in the UMEBA before, but he may immediately become the Metro Stars’ best hitter. With massive power and excellent contact ability, Gowron could be the difference-maker that Mumbai needs to make a deep playoff run.
