Metro Stars Week In Review, 6/24/39-6/27/39, and June Recap (2039 - #12)

Record: 2-2 Run Differential: -10

Oof. What a rough month this was for the Metro Stars. June ended with a game against Bucharest and a three-game series with Beirut. Mumbai has really struggled against Bucharest this season, and the latest series between the two teams was no exception. Despite some solid individual performances from 3B Toshio Taguchi, LF Alfredo Gonzalez, and SS Rafael Diaz, the Metro Stars scored only one run in the series finale while allowing six to the Impalers. At the halfway point of the season, the Impalers hold a 12-6 advantage over the Metro Stars in the season series.

Mumbai got back on track with a win against Beirut in game one of the final series of the first half. A three-run homer by C Honorio Queixada handed Mumbai the lead in the 3rd, and the bullpen held on to secure a close win. Game two of the series was a back and forth affair that headed into the 9th inning deadlocked at six. Jose Olivarez led off the top of the inning by getting plunked in the back. He was then bunted over to second before scoring on an error by Cedars’ 2B Sixto Perez. Aurelio Fernandez threw his second consecutive perfect inning to pick up the save. The final game before the All-Star Game started out poorly and got worse. Beirut scored a run in each of the first three innings and then put up five in the 5th. The Metro Stars were held to only one run, an all too common occurrence as of late. Mumbai scored one or fewer runs seven times in June.

Hitter of the Week: 3B Toshio Taguchi
.563/.563/.563 1 R 1 RBI

Yeah those stats are right. Nine hits in four games and every one was a single. Only one run and one RBI too. This team might not have won a game in June if it weren’t for Taguchi. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but he has been fantastic while most of the team has been, well, not good. Taguchi now has a .330 average with 23 homers and 67 RBI, all top three numbers in the Bancroft. If Taguchi and Olivarez can ever get going at the same time, this team could be scary.

Pitcher of the Week: CL Aurelio Fernandez
2 IP 2 SV 0 ER 1 K 0.00 ERA 0.00 WHIP

Fernandez was a sight for sore eyes after Rafael Cruz provided plenty of drama in the closer’s role recently. He wasn’t flashy, but he did save two close games against Beirut. It will be huge for Mumbai if Fernandez can lock down the 9th inning for the rest of the season.

Other Notes

At the All-Star Break, the Metro Stars lead the Bancroft League by a single game over Bucharest with Jerusalem sitting three back. Although Mumbai has led the league for most of the season, the stats show that they may not be able to hold that lead for much longer. The Metro Stars (+59) trail both Jerusalem (+118) and Bucharest (+90) in run differential. Hopefully the team has just hit a rough stretch, but this has the look of something more serious. The starting pitching has been suspect all season, but the offense has taken a nosedive over the past month. The recent additions of Jose Romero and Juan Parra should improve those numbers some, but a large portion of the team’s success in the second half lies on Jose Olivarez’s shoulders. In June, Olivarez posted a batting average of .248 compared to .408 in April and May. His BABIP over the first two months was surely unsustainable, but his BABIP in June was also much lower than should be expected. Expect Olivarez to rebound to acceptable levels but maybe not the player that he was for the first two months.

C Jose Romero and 1B Juan Parra have officially been added to the roster. To make room for them, C Juan de los Santos and SS Alejandro Flores have been optioned to Lagos. Romero is expected to take over primary catching duties against right-handed pitchers while still sharing some time with Honorio Queixada. Juan Parra will become the primary first baseman and should start most games.
