Metro Stars Week In Review, 6/3/39-6/9/39 (2039 - #9)

Record: 4-2 Run Differential: +11

Following two tough losses to start the series against Cairo, the Metro Stars pulled off a tough win to keep from getting swept. Mumbai went ahead early before Reese Rayner gave up three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game. The game remained tied until the 9th inning when Toshio Taguchi singled home Jose Olivarez to put the Metro Stars ahead, 4-3. Rafael Cruz came in and pitched a scoreless inning to seal the win.

The series against 26-30 Baghdad started with a disappointing performance from Leonardo Gomez who gave up five runs in 4.2 innings, a deficit from which the Metro Stars would not recover. Mike Manning started game two and provided an effective outing despite only striking out one. Aurelio Fernandez and Rafael Cruz came on to close the game out, giving the Metro Stars the 4-1 win. The offense struggled again in the series finale, where the team was limited to one run on four hits. SP Tim Oliver pitched well but not well enough to bail out the offense.

A big series against Jerusalem began with the Hebrew Hammers striking first with the Metro Stars immediately answering back in the bottom of the 1st. The Stars erupted for six runs in the bottom of the 3rd, which were all the runs that starter Salvador Gonzales would need. Mumbai rolled to an 11-2 win in game one. Game two started off much the same, with Jerusalem scoring in the top of the 1st and Mumbai responding in the bottom. The Metro Stars pulled ahead in the 4th inning by scoring three and never looked back. Reese Rayner’s excellent start kept the Hebrew Hammers from putting anything together, as he struck out eight over five innings and only allowed one run. Relievers Martin Bacardi and Rafael Cruz combined for four scoreless innings to end the game.

Hitter of the Week: DH Jose Olivarez
.400/.444/.760 7 R 5 RBI 1 2B 1 3B 2 HR 2 BB

The Metro Stars offense has been scuffling a bit lately, and a lot of the blame can be assigned to Jose Olivarez. When he’s hot, the offense is hot. When he’s not, the whole team seems to struggle. This week was a bit of an anomaly. Olivarez was fantastic, but the team was not. The Metro Stars really need some other hitters to step it up, or Bucharest and Jerusalem could start creeping up behind them very soon.

Pitcher of the Week: SP Reese Rayner
12 IP 1 W 4 ER 13 K 3.00 ERA 0.75 WHIP 13.0 K/BB

Reese Rayner has quickly emerged as the Metro Stars' best starter. Although he started the season rough, he is currently on a streak of four consecutive quality starts. His latest outing against Jerusalem was one of his best yet, despite only pitching five innings. Rayner has excelled by putting up solid strikeout numbers with a minuscule number of walks. He currently leads the UMEBA with a 9.0 K/BB rate.

Other Notes

The Metro Stars announced the signing of SP Irving Espinoza to a 1-year, $330,000 deal this past week. To make room for Espinoza, the Metro Stars have demoted SP Salvador Gonzales back to Lagos after only one start with Mumbai.

Mumbai has come to terms with first round draft pick CF Baden Goulding. Goulding will receive a $600,000 signing bonus as part of his contract and will report to A Ho Chi Minh City.

Nice to see Raynor back on track. Olivarez sitting at .383 is crazy in that I feel like he’s underperforming. Let’s go, Oz!

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.

He's really been slumping lately. Hope he can get back on track soon. I really thought he could hit .400.
