Metro Stars Week In Review, 5/20/39-5/26/39 (2039 - #7)

Record: 3-3 Run Differential: +11

After taking game one from Bucharest last week, the Metro Stars did not fare as well in game two. Starter Mike Manning struggled again on the mound, allowing six runs over 2.2 innings. The offense performed admirably but not well enough to beat the Impalers. SP Tim Oliver struggled in the final game of the series, not making it out of the fourth inning after throwing 90 pitches and walking five. The offense battled back from the early deficit to tie the game up thanks to some small ball in the ninth inning. CL Rafael Cruz was brought in in the bottom of the ninth and served up a solo homer to Alberto Padilla, surrendering his first run in almost a month and giving the Impalers the series win. This was the third series loss of the season for Mumbai (all to Bucharest) and the first since April 15.

In the first game against Bucharest, the Metro Stars piled on the runs for an 8-2 victory. Roberto Perez had one of his rare showings, going 2-4 with a home run and four RBI. The Metro stars also took game two, 7-2. Reese Rayner pitched a fine game, throwing seven innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out five. On the offensive side, C Honorio Queixada led the way, going 2-3 with a homer. Queixada is now hitting .325 on the season with a 123 OPS+. The pitching faltered again in the final game of the series with Leonardo Gomez giving up eleven hits and four earned runs over six innings. A solo homer by Daniel McDaniel in the 8th gave the Metro Stars the lead until Rafael Cruz faltered for the second time in four days surrendering a walk-off three-run tater in the 9th.

The first game against Manama went better, a 7-2 win for Mumbai. In a great combined pitching performance, three pitchers allowed only five hits and one walk while the offense provided twelve hits and seven runs thanks to big nights from Toshio Taguchi and Juan de los Santos.

Hitter of the Week: C Honorio Queixada

Honorio Queixada has been one of the interesting stories for the Metro Stars this season. Originally slated to only start against lefties, he has recently begun to start roughly half of the games against righties as well. Queixada has been great behind the plate and even better while at bat. He will likely start to see more and more playing time if he keeps it up.

Pitcher of the Week: SP Reese Rayner
7 IP 1 W 2 ER 5 K 2.57 ERA 0.86 WHIP

The Metro Stars’ rotation has been extremely inconsistent this year, with most starter alternating solid outings and terrible ones. In his tenth start of the season, Reese Rayner put together one of his best performances, bringing his ERA down to a still-awful 6.18. Rayner will have to have more starts like his last one to avoid being replaced in the rotation soon.

Other Notes

The Metro Stars saw their lead over rival Bucharest drop to three games this week; however, their run differential improved to the best in the league (+71). At three games ahead of Bucharest and an astonishing eight ahead of Jerusalem, the Metro Stars are right where they want to be at this point in the season. Jerusalem is expected to come roaring back soon enough, making the current eight game lead that much more important.

Seeking rotation help, Mumbai signed SP Kevin Hicken to a minor league contract. Hicken started three games for Beirut earlier this season and posted a 7.53 ERA. He will be assigned to AAA Lagos in hopes that he figures something out.
