Metro Stars Week In Review, 5/13/39-5/19/39 (2039 - #6)

Record: 5-1 Run Differential: +20

This week started with a finish to the series against Beirut. After falling to the Cedars in game one, the Metro Stars took the second game of the series thanks to a solid pitching performance from SP Leonardo Gomez and relievers Aurelio Fernandez and Rafael Cruz. Jose Olivarez led the charge in a game three victory with a Metro Stars’ record five hits, including his third homer of the year. The Metro Stars were able to knock out Cedars starter Julio Lopez after only 1.1 innings, scoring eight runs off of him. SP Mike Manning also turned in a solid outing, allowing two earned runs over 6.1 innings.

Mumbai got off to a quick lead against Jerusalem on Sunday, scoring three runs in the first inning thanks to Toshio Taguchi’s thirteenth homer of the season. SP Hsin-Pei Guo allowed eight hits over 5.2 innings but was able to limit the damage to only three runs, all scoring on solo home runs. The bullpen shutout the Hebrew Hammers throughout the rest of the game with Rafael Cruz getting save number seven. The Metro Stars also took game two 8-2 with 1B Roberto Perez having a big night at the plate, one of the few times he has looked good this season. Versatile reliever Martin Bacardi picked up his first save of the year, pitching a scoreless 3.2 innings to close the game. The Hammers took game three of the series 6-2 behind great performances from SP Viacheslav Vasilyev and RF Flynn Johnson. So far this season, all four series between Mumbai and Jerusalem have gone in Mumbai’s favor, 2-1.

In yet another big series, as almost all series seem in the UMEBA, the Stars took on the hated Bucharest Impalers. Mumbai took the first game of the series 8-2 with a great all-around performance from the team. Individual standouts included LF Alfredo Gonzalez, who went 2-3 with a homer, and SP Leonardo Gomez, who pitched six innings of one-run ball.

Hitter of the Week: DH Jose Olivarez
.520/.600/.840 10 R 4 RBI 2 2B 2 HR 6 SB

Jose Olivarez has been everything the Metro Stars have asked for and more. He somehow raised his batting average over the past week to a league-leading .431. Olivarez also stole six bases to raise his league-leading total to 23. For Mumbai to hold onto its early division lead, it will imperative that Olivarez keep up the good work, which may be difficult considering his .457 BABIP.

Pitcher of the Week: SP Leonardo Gomez
14 IP 1 W 4 ER 9 K 2.57 ERA 1.07 WHIP

Gomez has certainly looked like the Stars’ staff ace this season, posting a 2.90 ERA on the season. While he doesn’t strike many out, he has excelled at keeping the ball in the park and not walking opposing hitters. This past week he started two games, turning in solid outings in both. If Gomez can continue his current pace, he should give the Metro Stars the opportunity to win a lot of games.

Other Notes

SP Hsin-Pei Guo has been placed on waivers after a disappointing six starts in which he pitched to a 6.35 ERA allowing 2.8 HR/9 and only striking out 3.2 per 9 innings. SP Kane Dunham has been recalled from AAA to replace Guo in the rotation. Dunham posted a 3.90 ERA over 20 starts for the Metro Stars last season and has a 3.21 ERA in AAA this season.

With their second pick in the amateur draft, Mumbai selected 3B Ivan Lovett, a teammate of their first selection, Baden Goulding, on the Weno Crush. Lovett is seen as a solid all-around hitter with no true standout attributes. He may eventually need to move over to second base due to his only average arm.

In the third round, the Metro Stars chose CL Nick Angwin. Angwin was exceptional in the closer’s role for the Wellington Mariners in 2038 but has struggled greatly in 2039. He is seen as a high-ceiling player with an extremely low floor.

Mumbai recently signed a few players to minor league contracts for the sake of depth. These players were 2B Michael McCarthy, 3B Gerardo Lopez, and LF Jesus Fernandez. They will be assigned to AAA Lagos.

The GM manager of the Bucharest Impalers was heard muttering under his breath after that game.... I couldn't make it out, but it sounded something like "rats"?

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
