Metro Stars Week In Review, 4/29/39-5/5/39 and April Recap (2039 - #4)

Record: 3-3 Run Differential: -9

Mumbai polished off another pair of series wins this week, taking two games each from Cairo and Baghdad. It was another week full of close games, with all but one game being decided by two runs or fewer. The week began with a 4-3 victory over the Chariot Archers. All four of the Metro Stars’ runs scored on a 5th inning grand slam by Masaharu Suzuki. The bullpen was stellar, allowing only one run on two hits through 4.2 innings. Rafael Cruz picked up his first save of the year with a scoreless 9th. Cairo took the final game of the series in a 10-8 slugfest. Toshio Taguchi went 3-5 with his tenth home run of the year, but it wasn’t enough to make up for poor outings by Reese Rayner and Juan Rocha. A three-game set against Baghdad started with a 5-3 victory. 1B Roberto Perez, who has struggled otherwise, belted three homers in the game to provide enough run support for Mike Manning and the bullpen to get the win. Rafael Cruz pitched a perfect 9th to get his second save of the week. With yet another walkoff, the Stars took the second game of the series 7-6 over Baghdad. Down by two in the 9th inning, Jose Olivarez led off with a solo shot to pull within one run. Roberto Perez followed with a single and then scored on a double from Masaharu Suzuki, tying the game. After a strikeout from Alfredo Gonzalez, Antony Henderson smacked a 2-2 pitch from Kings’ closer Jeff Ranagan to center field to score the winning run. The final game of the series against Baghdad did not go well for the Stars. They were blown out 11-1 and only managed five hits in the contest. A big series with Jerusalem began on Thursday with the Stars falling to the Hebrew Hammers 7-6. The Stars were unable to overcome the Hammers’ early lead, stranding twelve baserunners in the process.

Hitter of the Week: 3B Toshio Taguchi
.423/.445/.692 6 R 5 RBI 2 HR 1 2B 2 HR 1 SB

Toshio Taguchi put an exclamation mark on his excellent month of April with a great week. Expected to simply fill in as a platoon player, Taguchi has been the most valuable player in the UMEBA so far. Taguchi was recently awarded the Bancroft League Hitter of the Month award for April.

Pitcher of the Week: CL Rafael Cruz
2 IP 2 SV 0 ER 2 K 0.00 ERA 0.50 WHIP

Pickings were slim on the pitching front this week, which makes it easy to select Rafael Cruz as the Pitcher of the Week. Cruz picked up for Bras Gesteiras after he faltered in the closer’s role, and Cruz has picked right back up where he left off last season. Cruz saved two games this week for the Metro Stars, allowing only one baserunner and no runs.

Other Notes

The initial plan after signing 1B Roberto Perez was to demote either 3B Toshio Taguchi or 3B Gilbert Hansen when 3B Manny Silva returned from the IL, but with both Taguchi and Hansen on hot streaks, Silva was instead the one sent to AAA Lagos. Time will tell if he will be called back up to the majors or perhaps shipped off somewhere else.

With RF Daniel McDaniel returning from the IL, LF Masaharu Suzuki has been demoted to AAA with LF Alfredo Gonzalez staying in Mumbai. The recently-acquired Suzuki will be given a chance to prove himself in Nigeria after a rough start to his UMEBA career. It is expected that he will be recalled fairly soon if all goes well.
