Metro Stars Week In Review, 4/22/39-4/28/39 (2039 - #3)

Record: 5-1 Run Differential: +4

The Metro Stars finished their second consecutive week with a record of 5-1, although those records were achieved in much different ways. This past week, Mumbai took four of their five wins via the walkoff, with two games going extra innings. The week began with a 6-1 loss at the hands of the best pitching staff in the league, the Manama Pearls. In the rubber match, the Stars got off to a good start before the bullpen faltered and allowed the Pearls to tie the game at five in the 8th inning. Jose Olivarez led off the 9th with a single before advancing to second on a single by Masaharu Suzuki and stealing third base for his ninth stolen base of the year. Olivarez was able to score on a hard hit grounder to the right side of the infield by Dave Molina to win the game. Reese Rayner got the series against Istanbul off to a good start with his first quality start of the year en route to a 6-2 victory. The bullpen once again struggled in the second game against the Bosphorus, as they scored four runs in the 9th to tie the game and another in the 10th to go ahead. Following a single and a walk to start the bottom of the 10th, utility man Gilbert Hansen eked a three-run homer just over the left field wall to walk off the Turks. The final game of the series was a low scoring affair that the Bosphorus led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 9th. The Metro Stars were able to tie up the game thanks to a hard hit single through the infield from Antony Henderson that scored Dave Molina. In the bottom of the 11th, Molina played the hero again, doubling in Daniel McDaniel to end the game. The last game of the week was the beginning of a big series against the Cairo Chariot Archers. The Stars took a lead in the bottom of the 8th before Bras Gesteiras struggled in the closer’s role again, allowing the Chariot Archers to tie the game. Luckily the Stars recovered quickly with Michael MacCrain hitting a walkoff homer to bring the week to a close. This 5-1 week gives the Metro Stars a two game lead in the UMEBA Bancroft League over Bucharest and a four game lead over the preseason favorites Jerusalem.

Hitter of the Week: RF Daniel McDaniel
12-22 4 R 4 RBI 1 2B 3 HR 2 SB 4 K .545/.545/1.000

The recently-acquired and even more recently-injured McDaniel was on fire in his first week with the club, slugging three home runs and hitting for a .545 average. McDaniel also stole two bags and scored four runs to help the team to their current two game lead in the Bancroft League.

Pitcher of the Week: SP Reese Rayner
7 IP 1 W 2 ER 2 H 2 BB 4 K 2.57 ERA 0.57 WHIP

After a solid yet unspectacular career in the BBA, Rayner is in his first season in the UMEBA. He hasn't gotten off to the greatest of starts, but hopefully that will begin to turn with his most recent start. Rayner only allowed two earned runs over 7 innings even though he only struck out four.

Other Notes

RF Daniel McDaniel was diagnosed with biceps tendinitis and was placed on the 7 day Injured List. He is only expected to miss the minimum time required. LF Alfredo Gonzalez was recalled from AAA Lagos to replace McDaniel for the next week. Gonzalez is hitting .343/.408/.522 in 76 PA at the major league level this season.

CL Bras Gesteiras has had some struggles in his first two weeks as the Stars’ closer. The hard-throwing Brazilian has a 6.94 ERA this season and has only saved 1/4 opportunities. GM Will Gibson said that the team will stick with Gesteiras for now, but they have some other options if they need to make a change. Former closer Aurelio Fernandez and set-up man Rafael Cruz are among the frontrunners to take over if necessary.

The 2039 UMEBA Amateur Draft will be starting this week. The Stars are said to have a clear-cut favorite in the draft class, but believe that they can find value at the #6 pick even if their preferred choice does not fall that far.

Edit: The Metro Stars have recanted on their former statement and have removed Bras Gesteiras as closer. Rafael Cruz has been named the new closer, reprising his role from last season when he led the UMEBA in saves.
