Metro Stars Week In Review, 4/15/39-4/21/39 (2039 - #1)

Post by ThePreyingManta » Wed Jul 03, 2019 6:18 pm

Record: 5-1 Run Differential: +17

Needing a good week to stay in the race with the horrid Bucharest Impalers, the Metro Stars got just what they needed. Although the Stars lost the series with the Impalers, they were able to salvage the series with a Game 3 victory. Facing the astoundingly winless Beirut Cedars, the Stars narrowly avoided embarrassment after a close first game and went on to sweep the series. To round out the week, the Stars took down the Manama Pearls in a 14 inning barn burner decided by a Toshio Taguchi walk-off single. The bullpen were the real stars of the week. Over 24.1 inning, they pitched to a 0.74 ERA with a 0.70 WHIP and 10.7 K/9, including 7 scoreless innings in the 14-inning game against Manama.

Hitter of the Week: DH Jose Olivarez
.393/.433/.571 4 R 2 RBI 3 2B 1 3B 5 SB

Jose Olivarez has made former GM Shoeless Olmsted look like a genius so far, posting a .407 batting average through the first three weeks of the season, good enough for second in the league. Batting-wise last week was actually a down week for Olivarez, but he still had the best OPS on the team. The speedy 24-year-old added 5 stolen bases to bring his total up to 8 on the season.

Pitcher of the Week: SP Leonardo Gomez
7.1 IP 1 W 4 H 0 BB 7 K 0.00 ERA 0.55 WHIP 2.04 FIP

The preseason #50 prospect in the UMEBA has been stellar through his first 3 starts of the season, with a 2.01 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP. Last week Gomez dominated Beirut en route to 7.1 shutout innings. The bullpen finished off the shutout to give Gomez his second win of the season.

Other Notes

New GM Will Gibson made some immediate changes after coming aboard last week. He completely rearranged the bullpen, naming Bras Gesteiras the new closer and moving Rafael Cruz and Lyndon Rosebotham into setup roles. Former closer Aurelio Hernandez is still expected to get plenty of action as a middle reliever.

The Metro Stars signed eight free agents to contracts. SP Hsin-Pei Guo is expected to step into the rotation immediately, while 1B Roberto Perez, LF Masaharu Suzuki, CF Dave Molina, and RF Daniel McDaniel will join the starting lineup. All eight free agent signings will be detailed in a separate article.

3B Manny Silva fractured his foot when Bucharest SS Hiroshi Hishikawa caused a collision at third base. Silva is expected to be sidelined for two weeks. During this time, Toshio Taguchi will fill in at third. Taguchi has been excellent on the season, blasting 7 home runs with a 188 OPS+.

Just here to watch everyone jump on the Olivarez bandwagon. He’s likely my only good move since joining the BBA universe. Thanks for the shoutout.

Edit: Beat Bucharest!
Edit 2: Great team news.

I must say, I'm pretty upset about the Jose Romero trade. He would be very nice to have.

Ahh, he’s an awful receiver, likely giving up an extra run per 9 compared to a guy like Griffin, who would make your pitchers better. But, as they say, there wouldn’t be horse races if there wasn’t difference in opinions.

Plus, I viewed the UMEBA as an arms race. I felt the opportunity cost of losing another big bat was outweighed by the chance to make their weapons less effect.
