55.02 Monarchs Announce Major FA Signings
Sporting his new #4 Monarchs jersey, veteran shortstop Francisco Otero said that he was “eager to meet his new teammates” and that he was “thrilled to join a championship organization.” London introduced their two newly acquired stars to the media in a carefully orchestrated event that was carried live on Sky Sports. Otero led the GBC in WAR and OBP among shortstops last season by a wide margin.
Standing alongside Otero was the team’s new full-time DH, Odemar Lock, from the Dutch Antilles. Although he is a very capable first baseman, the Monarchs intend to employ him primarily as a DH, as he has had some trouble in the past with injuries. Analysts frequently hold up Lock as the poster child for the Three True Outcomes, a sabermetric term that Lock has embraced. Always outspoken, Lock assured the gathering that he intended to lead the GBC for the third year in a row in both walks and strikeouts, which confused some of the less-baseball-savvy press at the event. “Aren’t strikeouts bad?,” he was asked. With a grin, Lock told the reporter that “this way, I don’t ground into many double plays.” Lock has prodigious power, and the Monarchs are hoping that he leads the league in home runs as well as the other two categories. An anonymous club source revealed that given his penchant for drawing walks, they expect the slugger to be their regular leadoff hitter, an unusual lineup slot for a slow-running power hitter like Lock.
