2052.04 Monarch McMusings 2: The Hardest Part of the Job

Notes from GM's Desk:

It's never easy to tell a player they're off the team. Even when I've traded someone to a better opportunity (like a great player going to a contender and away from whatever 100-loss team I'm trying to keep together at the moment), that communication is awkward. The thing we often forget is that players have connections, roots, plans-- and one trade can derail everything.

But today was one of those bad days where the only news I had was negative. And yes, the players involved could have been better, so this is on them. I'm not taking Don Thomas into the office privately for anything but a "thanks for not sucking like everyone else around here" conversation.

Still, the second the new waiver claims walked in, everyone knew some players were on their way out the door. And all eyes were on the bullpen group, huddled in a corner talking shop. I didn't wait to make the suspense worse. And because of how close-knit the pitchers tend to be, I just called all three into my office. They looked about what you'd expect.

"You know why I've asked you in here," I said. All three nodded their heads. "I'm sorry that it's not working out. It's been a hard year and I know I'm new, but we have to look at some options and right now, I decided you three aren't part of our near-term future.

"Harry Ackland, you're going back to Buenos Aires, where they'll likely get you back on a proper development track. I'm not sure what the plan was here, but you're just not ready for the majors. This is actually better for you."

"I understand. I just hope I get to win a lot of games against you someday." We shook hands. He had a good grip.

"Ivan Molina, Markko Karttunen, I'm giving you both a chance to land a place elsewhere. If not, I'll consider taking you to one of our minor league teams, if you're willing."

"We'll see," said Ivan. Markko wouldn't meet my eyes.

"I wish you all a lot of luck," I said, and escorted them out.

There's going to be a lot more of these, sadly, in the coming weeks.

On the To-Do List:

• Review the dozens of players who responded to my inquires and see where they all would fit best, removing players with no futures.
• Review our player contracts, see if I want to get the jump on any extensions.
• Review staff contracts and potential places to upgrade leadership
• Find pub for a good stiff drink. Or three.
