Trades in Beirut this offseason

Post by BrianH » Fri Feb 12, 2021 9:13 pm

The Beirut Cedars offseason got underway quickly, many of the veterans on the team knew this group of guys would most likely not be back next year as the team was right up against the top of the salary cap. With several superstars set to hit free agency, or arbitration many around the Beirut organization began to wonder if this would be the year the Cedars missed the playoffs. After time has passed and Free Agency is now upon us, I think it's clear the Beirut Cedars are definitely not packing it in!! Thru the beginning part of the Offseason, we saw Beirut GM Brian Hughes work several trades for Beirut Superstars. Although many people would probably state that Beirut lost value in each trade it was important to get younger, and provide more salary cap flexibility heading into the offseason. Here were three major trades GM Brian Hughes pulled off for veterans that would have been paid big money!

Trade #1
Beirut Recieves:
2B Zenobius Kazantziakis (19) A

Mumbai Recieves:
CF Weaver Ripley (29) Salary: 5.4M UMEBA

Ripley is widely considered one of the two best CF in the UMEBA. He has extraordinary power, and is a plus defender in the field. Clearly the value for Mumbai was to good to pass up and they snag the top prize in this deal. Kazantziakis is a 19yr old who posses the abilty to be a solid defender and a plus contact bat with limited pop. With his solid speed and base path awareness Kazantziakis could prove to be a very solid lead off hitter for the Beirut cedars in the future!

Trade #2
Beirut Recieves:
1B Marco Acheson (24) Salary: 400K UMEBA #8 Prospect
RF Eligio Cosmo (19) A #24 Prospect

Athens Recieves:
SS Rubem Bordonhos (29) Salary: 5.4M UMEBA

Once again Beirut traded away the Superstar player making over 5M a year for young up and coming Prospects. Bordonhos is the gold standard for SS play in the UMEBA. In the three seasons he has played here he has been selected to the all-star team three times and been a BURT platinum stick award winner twice. To say that Bordonhos is accomplished would be an understatement. Athens knows exactly what they are getting in Rubem Bordonhos, which is the best SS in the UMEBA!! Beirut did manage to get two very nice pieces in return for Bordonhos in this deal. Marco Acheson was the #8 rated prospect last year and played his first full season in the UMEBA. Like most rookies there was some ups and downs but overall, he played very well. Acheson had 578 plate appearances and hit 289/360/782 with 14HR's and 56RBI's. The ceiling on Acheson is limitless. Cosmo is a 19 yr old RF who has great potential in this league. The number 24 ranked prospect he has the ability to be a perennial Allstar and a gold glover. It may not be today or tomorrow but Cosmo should be a staple in the Cedars lineup within the next 2yrs.

Trade #3
Beirut Recieves:
SP Norihisa Ganhado (20) A

Tripoli Recieves:
SP Charlie Iron Knife (32) UMEBA

Iron-Knife is 32 yrs old left handed SP who won 17 games last season and is a solid innings eater. Equally affective versus righties, and lefties Iron-Knife is the type of veteran presence that could anchor a young talented rotation and also still be a 20 game winner. His real value will be if Tripoli can make the playoffs. The prospect that Beirut got in return was 20yr old SP prospect Norihisa Ganhado. Ganhado was the #16 rank prospect last season in the UMEBA and there is a lot to like. He pairs plus Stuff,Movement, and Control, with 3 above average pitches. Ganhado looks to be a future #1 in this league.

Yeah, it looked like you had a bunch of guys getting pricey at the same time. You got a good haul of prospects back and are still in good shape to make the playoffs. Good deals.
