50 Game Assessment

Post by DugoutDesperado » Sat Aug 17, 2019 11:42 pm

As the new Beirut management is getting settled in, one can't help but notice that 49 games have already passed and Game number 50 will be the initial contest of the next sim.

At this point, the record over the last 49 games is 25-24 (compared to the 27-55 record prior to the takeover). This has many people asking the new helmsman, "What have you done to contribute to this turnaround?" Honestly, this helmsman wishes he knew.

One rumor was that the first grand experiment was to canvas the entire city of Beirut for corn fields in the hope of plowing them under and moving the ballpark there in the hopes of garnering some former baseball greats to show up. Unfortunately, the only fields to plow up were filled with potatoes and the main players to emerge instead of Shoeless Joe Jackson was Dave Kingman (who has lost his power but kept his .230 batting average and Anthony ‘Tee-ball’ Young with his career 15-48 record. Here's to hoping that we can at least persuade Moonlight Graham to show up some time after midnight.

Let’s look at some of the changes made to the team up to this point:
1. Claimed Carlos Torres off of waivers. Carlos has added a stellar glove in the outfield while hitting .313 and hitting 3 HR’s since his arrival to Beirut.
2. Claimed Yasutoki Yoshida off the waiver wire. Yas has hit .250 in a back-up role at catcher.
3. Added Chester Owens – Chester is only hitting .203, but does provide an upgrade in the middle infield at defense for Beirut
4. Activated Dave Bane – Dave adds another glove to the infield while batting .265 for Beirut
5. Moved Henning Veenman from the bullpen to the starting rotation.
6. Moved Julio Lopez from the starting rotation to closer. Julio has responded with 6 saves including 4 saves in his last 5 opportunities.

This surge has also seen a few players heat up during this stretch. Starter RJ Hughes has won 4 of his last 5 starts while having a 2.10 ERA during that stretch. On the offensive side, Dave Brunskill is hitting .351.

A few items on the horizon is to determine if the coaching staff needs upgraded in the minor league organization and to see what off-season moves can be made with some of the salary room that the team may have available.

Will the next 50 games be as kind? Stay tuned.

Glad to see a bit of TLC being applied to Beirut lol. I think most of the UMEBA teams would be a lot closer if all the teams had a full time manager but with all the comings & going’s a few teams fell through the cracks early on. The good thing is that with the BBA constantly cutting minor leaguers throughout the year there’s usually someone you can pick up to improve some part of the team
