Growing old in Cairo (2041-32)

One last shot at it?

Another losing week for the Chariot Archers seems to have all but KO’d the fading playoff hopes of Cairo, but there might be one last shot at it. After Cairo finish up the Istanbul series it’s Manama that rock up into the Seven Wonder ball park. If the Chariot Archers can only get a sweep of their wild card rivals there, then the battle may well be prolonged. On the other hand, if we allow the Pearls to win one or more games then it probably really is curtains for the 2041 post season bid.

Manuel Soliz has now completed 10 starts since signing as a free agent for Cairo and is just about in the positive with a 5-4 winning record. Some stats aren’t that great with a 1.60 WHIP and only a 3.9 K/9, but his ERA is under 5.00 and he’s only allowed 31 runs in 57 IP. Another of those added at the same time, Pedro Vazquez, has settled into the closer/stopper role. In 24 outings he has converted seven out of eight save opportunities and posted a 3-3 record. He has struck out 58 batters in 44 IP and walked 28 batters.

Mauro Garcia with a homer in a 2-5 loss to Istanbul has reached the 40 homer plateau for the first time in his career, he also has 113 RBI now which is seven short of his career mark of 120 set while playing for Calgary’s AA affiliate way back in 2034. Another homer hit in that loss to the Impalers was by Raul Castrejon, that was his 10 of the season, the fifth time he has reached double-digit homers in his career. He really has been one of the best hitters for Cairo this season. Just shy of that mark, on nine, is catcher Bungay Martin. In his sophomore season he is two homers short of his career mark and has set his major league highs for RBI (56), walks (76) and OPS (.860). He has also reduced his K’s by around a third from his rookie season and has matched his best WAR (3.7)

It was a disappointing end to the Taipei Tigers season. After winning 112 games in the regular season they just couldn’t get the better of division runners up Bangkok in the League Championship Series. Despite winning 28 out of 49 regular season games against the Avengers they could only manage a single win against them in the post season and went out 4-1.
