Growing old in Cairo (2041-31)

Post by Fat Nige » Tue Feb 25, 2020 9:24 am

Beginning of the end?

While Cairo were two games behind the wildcard slot it always seemed as if it was tantalisingly in reach. Now though, as the Chariot Archers slip to four behind, it feels like the post season challenge is drawing to an end. With 19 games left in the regular season, of course, it is still possible but you’re starting to need a big swing in form to bridge that gap, it’s no longer that one series win that could change the destination of the wild card.

The mood in the team wasn’t helped by the loss of Francisco Quintana, out for the season after undergoing surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow. He had been one of the more consistent bullpen arms posting a 5-2 record, allowing 58 hits from 70 IP, his 82 strikeouts had be welcome but his 60 walks were on the high side. 22-yr-old Jose Machado received his first ever major league callup to replace Quintana, completing the unusual feat of playing at all four levels for the franchise in one year. He started in Taipei where he got just three games, giving up no runs or hits in 8.2 IP, before heading for Montevideo. He had eight outings there going 2-0 with two saves while giving up six hits and 3 earned runs in 21 IP. On to Nairobi he went and in five outings he pitched 12.1 innings give up six hits & an unearned run. His WHIP has been below 1.00 at all levels so far (Taipei 0.58, Montevideo 0.81 and Nairobi 0.97). Travelling with him will be Hector Gallo returning to the UMEBA after being sent down to Triple-A in the last pitching shakeup. He went 1-1 in nine AAA outings with a 1.16 ERA & 1.11 WHIP, the team don’t have that much improved faith in him, they just need an extra arm.

Mauro Garcia has picked up his second recent BURT league player of the week award and is now just one homer short of his first ever career 40-homer season. He has posted 4.8 WAR so far and his ZR of +7.9 is a career high as is his 1.084 def eff. 30-yr-old Rodrigo Estrada has gotten his first major league callup since he played 74 BBA games for California in 2036, he will provide some backup at second. Young 20-yr-old Anastasio Correa has picked up six hits from his 29 UMEBA AB’s but he’s not expected to get many more AB’s as the wildcard race enters the vital stages. With Piero Richelmi heading for the IL with back tightness Cairo will platoon Allan Miller and Christian Baudouin at shortstop.

Post Season News

The only affiliate side that made the post season was A ball Taipei and it looks like it will be one & out for the Tigers. Facing the Bangkok Avengers, who finished 10 games back mainly because they were 17 games worse than their expected record despite their +1115 RD, things haven’t gone will in their opening three games in the LCS. In Game 1 Taipei scored two in the first and another two in the fifth to seemingly win the home opener but blew it in the ninth when they gave up a 3-run homer and two 2-run homers to lose 7-4. They at least tied the homestand when Tigers scored three in the bottom of the eighth to win Game 2 by 4-1. In Game 3 at Bangkok Taipei were leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the ninth but once more blew it, coughing up another 2-run homer. The Avengers sealed the win with a run in the bottom of the 10th to take a 2-1 series lead. It will be a long slog for Taipei to turn this round.
