Growing old in Cairo (2041-30)

The final days on the farm

The minor league season is all but over now, so we have a quick run down of the final days for those down on the farm. A mixed bag for our three teams, Triple-A Nairobi suffered from the slump in Cairo and generally had a disappointing season, Double-A Montevideo had as good a season as we had hoped in their inaugural year. A lot of their players were minor league free agent signings to bolster the new level and we were pleased with the results. The jewel in the crown was A-ball Taipei, in their third season of the development they broke out with a 100+ win season. It was helped no doubt by the awfulness of some of the teams in the league but several of the Tigers’ players went on to impress at higher levels.

Nairobi Diamonds

A slump at the end of August where they lost 12 out of 18 games cost the Diamonds pretty much any chance of the post season after they had pushed Pennant winners, Dar Es Salaam, for most of the season. We almost pulled that back in the two September series, winning both, against the two playoff teams, but the series were both only won 2-1 and we missed out on the post season by one game. The fans are putting the blame on Paco Munoz’s late season slump, he had a 9-2 record mid-July before a five-game losing streak saw his record finally end up at 11-8. He suffered from some pretty erratic control as he walked 77 batters in 163 innings but balanced that with striking out 155 batters. Leftfielder Brody Weston didn’t have as good a season as Cairo expected of him, his drop from being a player producing around 3 WAR to a 1.3 WAR season was disappointing but most of his other stats held up. 123 hits in 118 games, 32 homers & 86 RBI with a slightly better OPS of .794. The general trend for the Diamonds players was down though as they missed the division pennant, and the post season, for the first time. The crowd stuck with the team though, the total attendance of 1,068 was the highest in the team’s four-year history.

Montevideo Leones

The South American Baseball League was a difficult one to judge, requiring virtually a whole new roster. Most of the players on our 2041 roster were signed as minor league free agents and we aimed for what we thought would be the younger end of the players in AA, around 24 or 25. The Leones flirted around .500 in the early part of the season and finished the year 9-1 in the last 10 games of 2041. They were still 12 games back of pennant winners Asuncion, but were closer to being in the wildcard race rather than the bottom four of this one-division league. 25-yr-old Lorenzo Sanchez finished the season winning the SABL pitcher of the month award for August. He was one of those who came from Taipei at the start of the year and managed a 12-7 record from 25 starts. Pitching nearly 153 innings he struckout 143 batters while walking 71, producing 3.0 WAR. 24-yr-old Jesus Martinez was promoted mid-season after hitting 10 homers & 100 RBI in A-ball, he didn’t quite reach those heights in Double-A, but showed enough to mark him as a star of Montevideo in 2042. Another 24-yr-old that started in Montevideo from Taipei was third baseman Kazutoshi Ishii who walked 116 times while only striking out 106 times. Add to that 10 homers, 15 doubles & 45 RBI and you can see why he posted 3.3 WAR.

Taipei Tigers

What can you say about Taipei? Came out the blocks firing and never looked back, OK the standard of some of the opposition wasn’t the greatest but you still have to beat them at any level. Provided a stream of players to Montevideo throughout the season but kept winning, finally producing a team high 111 wins with the last two games still to play, they’re against play-off opponents Bangkok. The Tigers will be the only affiliate in the post season and looking to advance to the FEBL World Series this time round. With just those two regular season games left two outfielders are still hitting over .400 for the season. 23-yr-old Miguel Gutierrez (.409/.465/.576) and 21-yr-old Theobold Feldhahn (.444/.485/.574) were both leaders on the field for the team. Gutierrez now holds the all-time single season record for RBI (143), Runs (140), Hits (214), TB (301) and SLG (.576) as well as leading the team with 4.4 WAR while Feldhahn led the whole of the FEBL with a .444 batting average and has the Tigers’ single season records for AVG (.444), OBP (.485) and OPS (1.059). Both of them hold second spot places on many of the records too. 23-yr-old Jorge Valentin only got in 60 games but finished the year with a flourish ending with a triple slash of .396/.502/.589 and went 11-15 with 11 RBI in the final two games of the last Tokyo series (we won’t talk about his 0-3 in the first game).
