Growing old in Cairo (2041-27)

Outfield injury causes ripple throughout the franchise

After a win over Mumbai snapped a five-game losing streak, the Chariot Archers went on a ‘five wins in six’ tear of their own. The one loss was a 13-1 blowout in the final game in the home series against Jerusalem, but the most important game as for far-reaching consequences, was the first game in the series. Cairo edged it by the odd run in 11 but it was the loss of Elijah Curry that started a chain of events. In the bottom of the second innings he collided with the Hebrew Hammers’ third baseman as he tried to go first to third. He complained of shoulder pain and was taken out of the game. At the end of the week the diagnosis came back and he headed for the IL with shoulder tendonitis, he is not expected back until the early weeks of September.

The Chariot Archers could have probably carried the open roster slot. Adrian Young has shared left field with Curry most of the season and the team would still have Miguel Gill as a fourth outfielder while Aubrey Anderson was also on the bench. Anderson can only really play right which would leave Gill covering left and centre field, possible but with the age & fragility of the outfielders in Cairo the team decided to call up another outfielder.

There were several possibilities within the farm but the franchise weren’t overly keen on starting the clock on some of their better prospects. The decision was made to call up 29-yr-old Carlos Sandoval, He had signed with the franchise at the start of 2040 following his release by Bucharest. This year he has proved to be a solid defender all across the outfield and able to swing the bat with some sort of consistency. He will backup all round the outfield against righthand batters, but in an experiment he will start in centre against lefties, allowing Raul Castrejon to log some innings in left field. It’s a bit of a conundrum really, Castrejon is better in the corner slots than centre, but Sandoval is better in the corners than Castrejon as well as being marginally better than Castrejon in centre field. We are keen to see how it all plays out given the salary cap pressure our outfielders are putting on the team for 2042.

All of this of course opened up other slots to be filled. 21-yr-old Javier Cuellar, who has already impressed at Taipei & Montevideo this season, will spend the last three weeks of the AAA season starting in centrefield to give us a clearer picture of what he maybe able to do ahead of a Non-Roster invite to 2042 Spring Training. Rafael Mullet also gets a callup from Taipei to Montevideo to provide centrefield backup cover. With only three weeks or less left of the minor league season’s schedule, the moves will give us a very small sample size but it will provide some data as we mull over promotions for 2042. 22-yr-old left fielder Jorge Valentin will get a shot and improving his play in centre field for Taipei, a move which may prove crucial to his future prospects. He’s near the cusp for heading to Montevideo and his chances of making the step-up would increase if he can demonstrate that he’s competent at centre as well as left.
