Growing old in Cairo (2041-25)

Nairobi move back into second

The Diamonds opened the week by losing their rubber game at SL2 leaders Dar Es Salaam but rebounded to sweep second place Victoria in the Drifters ballpark. This was enough to slide Nairobi past Victoria into second place although splitting two games with Khartoum meant they ended the week only one game ahead of Victoria and still three behind the leaders.

Paco Munoz’s slump continued though, he went six innings against Khartoum, only gave up two runs, struck out eight batters , but was still tagged with the loss after the Diamonds went down 4-1. That’s his fifth loss in a row now, a run which has seen him give up 22 runs and add nearly a point to his ERA. If he can’t snap this streak, he may well find himself missing out on a September callup and even spending another year in Triple-A in 2042. Time is still on Paco’s side, but the longer he hangs around in Nairobi the more pitchers may pass him in the organisational rankings.

Nairobi’s team leader now in both home runs and runs batted in is their left fielder 24-yr-old Brody Weston, he has 24 homers and 66 RBI this season so far. In his second year at Triple-A level he’s approaching the production levels of his first year and possibly on course to post over 2 WAR for the second year. His defence has definitely improved this year, he has recorded a range of 2.10 and a ZR of +3.7 and is now approaching the levels that would make him a real contender for a place in the Chariot Archers outfield for 2042. The buzz on the street though is he may get that outfield spot in Cairo almost by default, the three highest earning starters there are currently earning over $16 million between them and baring a substantial raise in the salary cap, one or more might well have to be on the way out of town.

22-yr-old Bjorn de Rooij is now trying to rebuild his career in Nairobi. After initial success at UMEBA level his performances fell way and he was optioned to Nairobi. At 22 he still has bags of time to regroup and convince the staff that he does belong in the majors. Bjorn works hard and throws a ton of pitches but unfortunately even the best of them are only a tad above average. He needs to really work on either increasing the movement on his pitches or perhaps dropping a few of them and concentrating on the remaining ones. Since arriving back with the Diamonds, he has only pitched three innings in two outings and has given up five hits. On the plus side he has only allowed one run while striking out three of the 15 batters he’s faced although a WHIP of 2.00 is nowhere near the kind of stat that will get him back to Cairo.

One player that has a shout at making the 2042 Cairo roster is 29-yr-old Carlos Sandoval. Carlos probably hasn’t got much chance of being a starter baring injuries, but he is proving himself now a plus-plus defender across the outfield. That may be enough to get him a 4th / 5th outfield role if he has a decent Spring camp in 2042 although he could really strengthen his claims if he shows he could use his bat as well. He’s improved, pushing his triple slash up to .280/.329/.377 so far in 2041, but a further improvement to a .300 average would be most welcome. Currently projected to post a WAR around 1.1 – 1.3, a bit more effort could turn that to 1.5 and that would help his case no end when the coaching staff evaluate the season.
