Growing old in Cairo (2041-24)

Five Cairo Prospects to make an impact

OSA might not agree with my list, but in my opinion, these are the five players set to make a major impact in the franchise within the next one, two or three years. I started off doing a 1 to 5 ranking but by the time I got to the end it had turned into a ‘no particular order’ list as I realised that it was really hard to rank them. More of a “any of these could be seen in the UMEBA by 2043”.

1. 21-yr-old Javier Cuellar, Montevideo, AA

Originally a Brooklyn 7th round pick in the 2037 BBA First-Year player draft, he spent barely a year there before being released. Jerusalem had him for five days and Cairo signed him December 2038. Now in his third pro year for the franchise the light has suddenly switched on. In 61 games in 2041 for Taipei he hit .429/.517/.700 with a 1.217 OPS. Walking 45 times, he struck out just 27 times and had a +4.6 ZR at CF. Promoted to Montevideo he has played 20 games there and has a triple slash of .368/.403/.750. He had 15 HR & 70 RBI in Taipei and now 7 & 17 in Montevideo.
2042 might come a bit too early for him, but he will certainly get an invite to spring training and if he were to latch on to the team it would enable Cairo to move Raul Castrejon to his more favoured corner outfield role.

2. 22-yr-old Paco Munoz, Nairobi, AAA

A 20th round pick in the 2036 BBA First-year player draft by Madison, Paco became one of the few Rule 7 draft picks in 2040 and headed for Nairobi’s rotation. In 2040 he made 29 starts, going 9-8 with 172 K’s, and posting 3.3 WAR. He was the #1 most valued prospect for most of 2041, but his current slump of four heavy losses has seen Cuellar jump ahead of him. However, he did get his first career No-Hitter in July of this year. He will probably still get his first taste of UMEBA action with his year’s roster expansion, and is a lock for a rotation battle in the 2042 Spring Camp

3. 23-yr-old Brody Weston, Nairobi, AAA

Drafted in the 11th round of the 2037 BBA First-year player draft by Omaha, he failed to sign with them and was subsequently drafted in the 18th round of 2038 by Rockville who released him a week later. A December 2038 minor league signing by Cairo, he hit 35 homers & 102 RBI in his first year in Taipei. Promoted to Triple-A in 2040 he reduced his strikeouts, came close to maintaining his triple slash line at two levels higher and still hit 26 homers & 73 RBI. Now in 2041 his power and productivity has remained while his triple slash line is up a fraction while his defence too has improved. Cairo has had his number on speed dial all year for injury call-up, but they haven’t needed so far. He probably won’t get a September call-up to stop the clock running on him, but will be in 2042 spring camp with a pretty good chance of breaking camp as the Cairo starting LF

4. 21-yr-old Frazer Pond, Nairobi, AAA

The fifth overall pick in the 2038 UMEBA first year player draft by Cairo, Fraser is developing as the Chariot Archers would have liked at the moment. 5-5 from 12 starts in his first pro season in Taipei then 12-9 from 28 starts followed by 13-7 from 26 starts last year. The last two years he has produced 4 WAR and dropped his ERA to 3.50 with a 1.13 WHIP. In 2040 he reached the 200-strikeout mark for the first time from just 149 IP. This year he was promoted to Double-A where he went 5-2 from 10 starts with 82 K’s from 67 IP and a WHIP down to 1.09. An injury callup to Triple-A Nairobi has seen him establish himself at the highest level of the minors. In 11 starts this season there he is matching his Double-A figures, 5-2, ERA down to 3.18, WHIP constant at 1.09. He could be a real contender for the 2042 rotation in Cairo, elite Fastball & Slider with a Curve & splitter not far behind. His one black mark is the lack of movement on his pitches that may well be found out in the UMEBA, we shall probably see in 2042.

5. 20-yr-old Anastasio Correa, Montevideo, AA

Drafted in the 8th round of the 2038 BBA First year player draft by Twin Cities, they released him a month later. Just two days later Cairo swooped on him and despite a lengthy list of niggling injuries has increased his standing within the franchise year on year. Last year his triple slash in Taipei was .336/.438/.560 with 10 homers & 56 RBI, he also walked 42 times as well as striking out 42 times. This year he started with two substantial injury absences but has come back from that. He has virtually matched his triple slash averages in AA as he had in A ball and is still showing developing power. His defence is slowly coming around, but he is still very much on the cusp of being a RF or DH? Another with an invite to 2042 Spring Training although the plan is to send him to Triple-A for that year. Could well be up with the Chariot Archers in 2043 though.

Pond looks like he could be quite solid, despite the movement rating. He's got nice velocity and all of his pitches are above average and fully developed - looking good.
