Growing old in Cairo (2041-23)

Newbies don’t do any worse

In the first week after the desperate pitching changes the Chariot Archers actually came away with wins in four of their six games. Manuel Soliz got a good roughing up by Baghdad in his first UMEBA game, he was yanked after four innings having given up 11 hits and seven runs as the Kings went on to win 10-2. Cisco Salinas managed a clean innings in that game and followed it up by getting his only batter faced the next day to ground out to finish an 11-3 win. Ramon Garza too was also able to make his Cairo debut in the ninth innings, facing three batters and coming away with a walk and a strike out. Pedro Vazquez made his debut in the third game of the week with Cairo already down 4-2. He gave up a homer and a walk while also managing a strikeout.

After that the Chariot Archers won all three games and the three newbies were able to improve their Cairo record. Garza ended the week with two scoreless IP and a WHIP of 1.50, Salinas had four outings and ended with a save, an ERA of 2.70 and a 0.90 WHIP. Vazquez also had four outings and came away with two saves, a 1.50 ERA with a 0.83 WHIP while Soliz won his second outing. He pitched five innings, giving up eight hits but only one run on the way to a 6-4 win.

For the third straight month Cairo came away with 14 losses on the month and a record below.500, but August has started well as they have won their first two games. Currently they are two games back of Manama & Baghdad for that all-important BURT wildcard spot, but with 56 games still to play there’s perhaps no need to panic yet. Maybe the addition of the aforementioned pitchers could swing the chase in favour of Cairo, it’s just too early to tell.

Minor jottings

Nairobi’s ace Paco Munoz is in a real slump, losing his last four starts and giving up 20 runs in only 17 IP. Dusan Kukcenjac has come off the IL firing though, winning both his starts and giving up just one run in the process.

Javier Cuellar might not be as dominant at Double-A as he was at A, but he’s still hitting .368/.403/.750 in his 20 games at Montevideo. Add to that seven homers plus 17 RBI and the 21-yr-old is still looking like a future Chariot Archer. Another favoured Montevideo outfielder, 20-yr-old Anastasio Correa is hitting .328/.405/.561 with 11 doubles, 11 homers and has driven in 31 runs.

Two of the “Class of ‘41” in the Taipei Tigers A ball rotation, 17-yr-old Bradley Pryor and 16-yr-old Roger Mackey have made 19 pro starts between them in their fledgling careers and while they both sport rather large ERA’s Mackey has four wins and Pryor three. Both Taipei corner outfielders, Theobold Feldhahn (100) and Miguel Gutierrez (103) have both reached the 100 RBI plateau this season and are more than hopeful of passing David Bane’s Taipei record of 109 RBI set in 2038
