Growing old in Cairo (2041-22)

Around the Minors

Nairobi Diamonds

The pitching woes in Cairo have caused a bit of disruption in Nairobi, Cisco Salinas has been promoted from the Diamonds rotation to the Chariot Archers bullpen and the team has received Bjorn de Rooij and Hector Gallo from Cairo hoping to restore their mojo. In other pitching roster moves Dusan Kukcenjac is activated from the IL and heads for the #5 rotation slot, balancing that Grant Reese’s season is done after a torn meniscus. Reliever Eric Rush and his 6.49 ERA is cut to make roster space for the moves.

First baseman Antonia Sanchez and shortstop Jim Giles were also activated off the IL, both sliding into bench roles at the moment. All the changes haven’t helped Nairobi as they slip to 52-54, two games below .500, helping Dar Es Salaam to a five game lead over Nairobi & Victoria.

Montevideo Leones

Two four-game losing streaks in July have meant a 12-13 month so far for the Leones with four games left in the month. At 57-48 they are still winners but now 12 games behind leaders Asuncion, they are consigned to leading the bottom four in the SABL. Jose Sanchez returns from the IL to the #4 slot in the rotation meaning the release of Ramon Pestonit to make way for him. Rafael Rios has also been released, he could play many different positions, unfortunately all poorly. Replacing him is second baseman Jesus Martinez promoted from Taipei. He had hit 10 homers & 100 RBI in A ball, along with a .345/.441/.498 triple slash line. He will take over the starting 2B role from Ricardo Garcia who has stolen 17 bases but is hitting just .235. Martinez is the fourth player to have been recently promoted from Taipei, not all are doing well so far, but it’s all part of their learning curve.

Taipei Tigers

Despite recently losing Jesus Martinez and Mitch Lee to Montevideo in what’s becoming a well-trod route, the team are continuing their fantastic form. They have lost just two games in their last 20 on the way to an 82-18 record and qualification for the post season already. They recently posted their biggest victory in a game at Tokyo, winning 55-9 against the (not so) Magic. They sent 19 batters to the plate in the final innings !

Three players tied the Taipei regular season record for runs scored with seven while Rafael Mullet set the record for regular season AB’s with 10 going 7-10 as well as a walk, five runs & five RBI.

Five starters are still hitting over .400 on the season and the poorest batter has a .317 batting average.
