Growing old in Cairo (2041-21)

Desperate Pitching Changes

As July slowly turns into August Cairo are still rock bottom of the UMEBA, it’s now time to admit that the post season streak is over. The two main reasons for the slump this season the management have identified is that our sluggers haven’t been hitting as many homers as they have been in previous seasons and the main one is that the pitching staff has been absolutely awful in 2041. There’s not a lot we can do about this though, even the BBA is struggling to find decent pitchers lying around in free agency and with the lack of cap space our options are even more limited. We have a couple (maybe) of pitchers that could perhaps make the step up from AAA but are reluctant to blood them in the toxic atmosphere of this season. So we’ve had to trawl really deep in the bargain bucket of washed-up, never has been and failed pitchers.

We’ve come up with three that may make some sort of difference.

32-yr-old Manuel Soliz has arrived on a 1-year deal. He hasn’t got much of a successful pitching record, but at least his last eight seasons have been in the BBA. His last non-losing season was in 2037 for Vancouver and since then he’s failed at Brooklyn, Charm City & Portland. Not really expected to produce much but he replaces Jesus Lopez in the rotation. Lopez was 6-10 on the season in 20 starts with a 6.29 ERA, as Lopez was in his last contract year, he was released

27-yr-old Pedro Vazquez is another ‘rest of the year deal’. He’s spent 10 years in the Valencia Stars BBA organisation and last year reached AAA for the first time; he also has an A ball No-Hitter to his credit in 2035. Three top pitches make him the candidate to replace 35-yr-old Caleb Benavides as closer/stopper. Caleb just hasn’t had it this year and has blown six out of 15 save opportunities, he moves to a dark, quiet corner of the ‘pen.

32-yr-old Ramon Garza has been claimed off waivers from the Manama Pearls. Garza had just nine outings for the Pearls, pitching 11.1 innings giving up 10 runs and six walks. Maybe he just needs a change of scenery, who knows? A decent selection of pitches, can’t do any worse than the pitchers already in the bullpen. Hector Gallo has been optioned to Triple-A Nairobi, he started well, but in recent times has slumped.

Also promoted from Nairobi was 31-yr-old lefty Cisco Salinas. In the Diamonds rotation this season he has made 20 starts going 7-10 with an ERA of 4.23. In 117 IP he has struck out 77 batters and posted a WAR of 2.0. Salinas and Garza will be the setup men in the bullpen going forward. Not wildly exciting changes, more borne out of desperation. The mantra appears to be “Welcome to the club, you can’t do any worse”.

We shall see, we shall see . . .
