Growing old in Cairo (2041-20)

Taipei Tigers continue to roar

Just over the hallway stage of the Far East Baseball League and Taipei have 70 wins already, only 18 wins short of their win total last season. They have been unable to shake the Bangkok Avengers off though, they are still lurking five games back, mainly thanks to the Avengers inflicting the last five defeats on the Tigers.

That aside the Tigers have been powering home the runs, on 11 occasions this season they have scored 19 or more runs, and currently have a run differential of +501 which surprisingly is only the third highest differential in the FEBL in 2041. Taipei have recently lost CF Javier Cuellar and P Jeff McClain to Double-A Montevideo but others have stepped into the breach. Eight of the current starting batters have an OBP of over .400 with only 18-yr-old shortstop Liam Sheppard letting the side down with just a .386 OBP. The team is lacking a real slugger though, despite scoring 881 runs they don’t have anybody with double digit homers yet. The best they can manage is three batters with eight homers each, so it’s all “get on base and drive them round the bases” smallball that is succeeding for Tigers.

The pitchers haven’t been too shabby either, they’ve been running a six-man rotation all season and now have two members approaching ten wins with McClain having been promoted with eight wins. Mitch Lee has a 9-3 record from 14 starts and Jorge Pena has a 9-0 record from 15 starts. Closer Carlos Rodriguez has been solid too, in 35 outings he has posted a 6-1 record and successfully converted all 15 save opportunities.

The stove is hot in the back streets

The rumour mill has been going full steam in the ‘ahwas, tucked away in the backstreets & the markets. Fuelled by the common knowledge that Ryan Bond Chariot Archer’s owner was not too complementary about Laverick’s third year performance the whispers in the darkened smoke filled back rooms was that at least one of the prospective UMEBA expansion franchises were interested in hiring Laverick if he should become available. Talk grew so loud that popular sports TV channel “Al Ahly” went so far as to contact some of the prospective ownership groups to see about the story behind the rumours. Most were reticent to speak on camera, but a couple said “Sure, If, he became available or he could be tempted by a sack of money we would hire him”. When asked why given his career record isn’t exactly littered with success, and he hasn’t a history of staying anywhere for an extended period, the replies were “He’s really the ideal type of GM for an expansion franchise. An expansion franchise isn’t looking for success in the first few years, it’s looking for someone who can lay down the foundations for success. Very few expansion teams can get the players who bring success in the first two or three years, but what they can do is set the groundwork up for the minor league signings to progress and bring the franchise eventual success. That is what Laverick can do, look at Cairo. The minors are slowly bringing his draft picks through now and they’re close to making the breakthrough. In Louisville he drafted Kwakou and Hubbard, even further back he drafted Milt Linares jr and Maxwell Weiss jr for Atlantic City. Small crumbs of success we know, but that can be the spark you need. You just need to nurture that talent you drafted and bring them through. After that we can go and get a good GM !”
