Growing old in Cairo (2041-16)

Post by Fat Nige » Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:24 am

June turns out to be bad, but not as bad

It’s the hope that kills you, towards the end of May it was all the talk in the bars around Cairo of how with a bit of luck the Chariot Archers could bridge the gap to Manama and maintain their post season streak. By the start of June though the gap was five games and injury blows during the month saw everyone pull away and Cairo slump to the bottom of the BURT division. The gap to the wildcard spot is only two games though as the division closes up, while Istanbul appear to be over the hill and away, all the other three teams are within two games of each other. It was an unexpected four-game winning streak right at the end of June that had closed Cairo up to the rest as they looked like they were being cut adrift.

Bruno’s Cairo career could be over before it really started

Impressive young reliever Jose Bruno returned from the IL at the end of May but lasted a mere three games before he suffered a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament and his short pro career could be over before it really started. It could well be 2043 before he will be fit to return, and Cairo almost certainly won’t be able to wait for him. At 26-years -old when he returns he will be young enough to catch on with another team, his job will be to convince someone that he’s worth taking a gamble on. Approaching mid-June, the Chariot Archers were already in a four-game slump when they took on Baghdad, what happened next appeared to destroy the month for them. Both catchers Bungay Martin and Jose Sanchez were injured in that game and both were expected to miss the majority of the month. Happening at the beginning of a week, Cairo had to play the next five games without a recognised catcher, amazingly using a collection of aging outfielders with dodgy knees behind the plate they actually won the first two of these games. A catcher arrived from Triple-A the following Sunday but Cairo only managed to win one of the next 10 games, sending them below Baghdad who swept them at the Seventh Wonder Ball Park in that run. Sanchez was able to play again in the last week of June and helped the Chariot Archers to a four-game winning streak to finish the month off.

Lefty Roberto Gomez won three of his five June starts but he was really the only bright spot it what has really become a terrible pitching staff. With Cairo in Salary Cap trouble going forward they are somewhat limited as to what they can do to fix this, the word coming out of the front office is that they will write this season off and wait to see what comes out of Commissioner Rectenwald’s salary cap review. Elijah Curry had a good month, so often 2041’s forgotten man, getting into 12 games and hitting five homers. With Curry, Aubrey Anderson and Adrian Young all competing for two corner OF spots, it’ll be a really hard decision who’s still on the roster in 2042. One player guaranteed to be back for 2042 is 33-yr-old Mauro Garcia whose nine homers & 19 RBI in June left him well on course to post his third straight 35+ HR / 100 RBI season.
