Growing old in Cairo (2041-13)

More Pitching changes

As we come to the end of the second month of the 2041 season, we appear to be locked in our own private battle in the middle of the BURT with Manama for the BURT wildcard. After a poor April the Chariot Archers were 10-17, three games behind Manama, but after an improved May we are still three games away from Manama.

With two hard series left in May against the top two in the BANC, Cairo’s 10-11 month could go either way. Swept by Beirut and Mumbai and they could equal April’s 10-17 effort, win a few and they could finish over .500 for the month. A great help will be the return of Jose Bruno, just activated off the IL. He sat out three months in his rookie season last year with injuries and has already sat out five weeks this season. This gave us the opportunity to shake the pitching up again, Bruno will slip straight back into the bullpen and to make room for him Leon Chavez, 1-3 with an ERA a fraction short of 7.00, will be optioned to Nairobi. To fill that rotation slot Hector Gallo (abet with an almost identical record to Chavez) will have a go at starting, a role he hasn’t done since his days in the Montreal organisation in 2035 (he did have four starts in Taipei a few years ago though. Those changes probably won’t improve the pitching much, but it will make the staff think, and lets face it, it can’t get much worse.

Felipe Sanchez has been disappointing with the bat, hitting just .225/.323/.331, but he has no doubt saved many a run with his defence, weighing in with range factor over five and a 4.4 ZR. Bungay Martin meanwhile hasn’t been great defensively behind the plate, only throwing out around one in four would-be base stealers, but he has been sound with his bat. He’s on course for another double-digit home run tally and 40-50 RBI, looks like a second season around 4 WAR too. One area Cairo have never really found their man is at shortstop, over the last four years many utility players have ended up playing there as the few specialists brought in have proved very lacklustre. Now hopefully at the roster expansion or maybe next year if the playoffs are lost by then, the answer has been found. Thanks to injuries 24-yr-old Rakim Stevenson has made Triple-A Nairobi ahead of the team’s schedule for him. He’s been hitting a decent .324/.395/.588 from his first 10 games at that level, has hit three homers and has turned in a 5.6 ZR. Once the two regular AAA shortstops return from injury the Chariot Archers will be keen to see if he can cut it at UMEBA level.

Winning down on the farm

It’s all coming up roses at the moment in the Cairo farm. Nairobi are tied with Victoria at the top of their division with a 27-23 record. 23-yr-old Brody Weston has been impressing this season, his defence in left is improving, he’s hitting close to .300 and is on course to maintain his offensive output while cutting his strikeouts by a quarter. In Montevideo’s first season they have got themselves back above .500 (25-24) and are solidly in the middle of the Double-A table. In between injuries 20-yr-old Anastasio Correa has been improving in leaps and bounds in his first AA season. His defence is almost passable in right field now, he’s making a lot more solid contact with the ball and after 11 games (small sample size alert) he’s hitting .435/.480/.735.
Taipei are grinding the rest of A ball into the dirt, out in front of the division currently with a 37-7 record. Three of the top four in the batting lineup are hitting over .400 and the leadoff man is only hitting a mere .395 with a .495 OBP. 22-yr-old Jeff McClain has won all eight starts in his third year in Taipei, with 55 K’s and just 5 BB in 55 IP. He’ll be heading for Montevideo next year, but he’ll have to develop his circle change and get some more movement on his pitches if he wants to get success as a starter in AA.
